revs going up and down, could be your idle control valve.take it off and clean it with carb spray, see if that cures the revs.miss fireing could be crank sensor (im not sure do ).but i had a problem with my 2.5 missing, when i reved it up to about 3500 rpm it missed like mad especially when warm, this was the crank sensor.situated on top of the oil filter passenger side.hope this helps.. :y

That's the Cam sensor, not crank.  ;)

soz,but thought the cam sensor was on top of engine, towards n/s engine cylinder bank (oil filler side).and crank sensor was on top of oil filter on engine block. :y

Any engine managment lights on?

Is it a misfire, or just lack of power?

no management lights on the the backfire is comming from near the front of exhaust im guessing at the front and middle pipe joint thats why im wondering if it is this that would cause the symptoms of backfire and lack of power as im getting both.

Either, unburnt fuel in exhaust, or the exhaust is blocked...
