Title: Heater Control US!
Post by: Humpy on 24 October 2007, 20:01:58
Chaps,

I've realised that my Elite's heater contol (ie the one that controls where the wind is coming out, the right hand rotary knob) doesn't change where the wind is coming from! The air only comes out onto the windscreen and doesn't change when I turn the knob round. Any thoughts? I guess it's probably electric control rather than a cable so could it be the rotary switch gone US? Or worse :'( As an aside, the lights on the whole four knob heater control panel come and go, they come on when you wallop the panel but do tend to come and go. Could that be related?

Fortunately heated air on the windscreen's not a bad thing at this time of the year but it would be even nicer on me feet :)

Try resetting servos - press and hold Auto and Off for 10s

Sorry, should have said, it's not Climate just ordinary air-con! I guess that's for Climate?

Ah, sorry.

As a first port of call, check the vac layout in the engine compartment - the system is vac operated, and relies on it being in good condition.

I believe so, but neither of mine have the manual system, so I can't check...

As I had a day off today I had a little look at this problem with the heater controls. When I got the control panel off all the rubber hoses were all present and correct but on pulling off the 'yellow' feed hose there is absolutely no vacumn in that pipe :( In the Haynes manual (groan!) it says that this comes from the Vacumn reservoir but where the f**k is that? All (polite) suggestions gratefully received!

Humpy

PS The Haynes manual said to remove the five screws to remove the heater control panel, where as there were six and not in the places they said! Why do we bother >:(

Earlier cars have just the one vacuum reservoir, near the bottom of the 'bagpipes' Later cars have another vacuum res and IIRC it's in the pollen filter housing, there's a vacuum hose heading that kind of direction on my car.

He says there are only four screws holding the glove box in but .... if you have a mini face lift car (& IIRC a face lift) there's another screw at the side making 5 in total :o. I wondered why I couldn't get mine out! :'(  :y

Chaps,

Had a good look under the bonnet this weekend, even had the scuttle panel off to see what I was looking at. All the pipes seem ok and they all go to the right place! Now I'm back to square one :(

Mind you there does seem to be an awful lot of noise (like a vacumn or air leak) up at the back of the right hand bank and I've noticed I don't get only cool air out of the heater, only less warm! Is this something to do with tha HBV thingy? Could it be leaking vacumn? The car goes ok and stops ok so I would say that there is vacumn there somewhere to run the brake servo and the dual rams.

Check the main brake servo pipe for damage, it comes off the right hand side of the plenum and runs to the brake servo. I have seen them get holed due to rubbing when wrongly re-fitted.
