Title: erratic idling
Post by: scog on 11 November 2007, 09:49:32
hi
my car(omega 2.5 v6 elite) has started idling like a pig i bought the car about six weeks ago and the last six weekends have been spent sorting out one problem or another
and i think the next six months will be the same i dont think the idling is a big issue but after a run in the car when i park up the rev counter goes up and down like john holmes hand 400 rpm 1000 500 1500 400 1000 1500 500 you get the picture ive done a paper clip test with the engine running and it returns straight 12s
2 weeks ago i changed the rocker cover gaskets due to oil leaking everthing went ok
but ive noticed on some mornings  on starting the car a hissing from the top of the engine somewhere when the engine is hot the hissing stops i dont think this has anything to do with the idling issue as everthing will be gas tight once the engine is hot
another thing i can think of is im running on bp ultimate i dont suppose the octane rating would cause a problem but you never know
also when driving the car i notice when you take your foot of the accelerator pedal the car seems to brake on its own and it scrubs of any speed at an alarming rate
also when you press the sport button put your foot to the floor it takes about 5 seconds before you are pushed into the back of the car

Sounds like a couple of probs mixed together.

Probable air leak as a result of the breather clean, hence hissing sound.  May well be linked to needing to clean Idle Control Valve and ensure its re-seated properly.  Search for ICV, theres lots of posts on it and a simple remove/clean/lube fix that costs only a tin of carb cleaner.

Hesitant autobox may be fluid level/filter but someone with better knowledge of autoboxes will no doubt point you in the correct direction.  Could also be requiring a software update.....

Welcome to the site, by the way!!   :y

Hi,
these  can effect (as stated can be a combination also)

For solving your problem you can follow the order to check..

-ICV (dirty or bad)
-Blocked breathers
-Dirty fuel filter
-Air leakage
-Dirty Throttle
-sparks,
-Coolant Temp.sensor (old)
-Throttle potentiometer (old)
-Lambda sensors (old)
-Cam sensor (old)
-MAF (rare)

Dont trust EML light for sensors only because EML comes only when they are totally cooked..

Did the idling problem start after your breather cleaning job?  If so its likely somethings not back together properly and likely you've got an air leak somehere.   A bit of hissing is normal when the breathers are clear.
