Title: Heaters on Auto - How long til they start?
Post by: V8S on 13 November 2007, 16:41:43
Now the weather is getting colder, I've started to use the heater more. I usually whack the heated seat on til the engine is up to temperature then press the right hand knob dial thing to bring up my previous heater setting of 21 degrees. It is set on Auto.

When I do this, the fans seem to do nothing, or at least aren't audible, for about 2 minutes after which they start heating the cabin.

Can anyone tell me if this is normal?

It shouldn't take so long to sample the cabin temperature (which is cold) and start the heater fans, surely? It's not like the cabin is 20.9 and 21.1 degrees in different places and the computer needs to decide between them.

If I press the buttons to aim up, down or both, the fans come on fine. Likewise the windscreen button, which blasts at full strength immediately. In all other respects the heaters and air con work faultlessly.

Cheers,

Graham

hi yes mine takes about 2-3 minutes to come on.

It is because it is climate control (rather than straight from the engine) so it takes its time.

AFAIK the fans don't start driving in auto until they sense a small increase in coolant temperature, as all they would do is pump cold air at you !!

If you select other than auto.. demist for example, they blow straight away in order to start clearing the screen, as air movement will have an effect even if that air is cold.

On very cold days last winter my fans did not start (in auto) for 1-2 miles, as I thought there was a problem I did some "checking" and it appeared that the fans did not start to run until there was a discernable change in temperature on the coolant pipe leading from the HBV into the cabin.

Probably wrong but HTH

:)

Yep, the fans dont start blowing until the coolant temp is so many degrees higher than the cabin temp...

I suspected that the software wouldn't pump cold air in if I wanted it hot, but.... I wait til my engine temp is the average 80 or so degrees indicated on the temp gauge, which might be 4 miles down the road, so surely the coolant temperature is far warmer than the cabin temperature by that point?

E.g. yesterday it was 0 degrees outside (outside temp reading on the MID) and I drove to work 5 miles away. After about 3 miles the engine was up to 80 degrees and I tried the heater at about 4 miles, to test whether it would come on. I had the window open, offsetting my body heat and thus the interior was cold. It still took about 2 minutes for the fans to kick in.
