Title: Tapping sound when accelerating
Post by: rhino4 on 14 November 2007, 16:37:01
Hi there

Firstly, Wicked site. Good to know there is so many Omega owners out there!
I own a omega tourer estate 2.5 and have noticed that when I start my engine and drive away that there seems to be a slight tapping sound when I apply some gas. It is a very quite sound and does seem to get more quite after a few miles. Can you tell me if the sound is normal?

Thanks in advance

Could be a blowing exhaust manifold gasket I guess?
Maybe a hydraulic lifter rattling?

Best to have a careful listen under the bonnet and see if you can hear anything odd. Give it a blip of the throttle if nothing's obvious at idle.

Thanks for the quick response mate.

I have tried that. When the car is stationery it is fine, it seems to be when I accelerate whilst moving, the more gas gas applied, the quicker it seems to get. Its not really loud, just concerned it may be something that needs to be addressed before something major happens!

This may sound stupid ... but several years back I had a Granada Scorpio that suddenly developed a similar noise, speed related tapping but totally silent when stationary no matter what revs applied.

After 3 garage trips and numerous head scratches it was decided to put it on the ramps and check from underneath with the back wheels raised. we never got around to running it like that because on walking underneath it was instantly spotted .......

A piece of wire about 18 inches long, quite thin like bell wire but more flexible,  was wrapped around the propshaft and the end was striking the car as it revolved ... as the wire was "light" and flexible no damage had ben done, just a few marks on the underseal.

Cut the wire away .. no more noise !!  :)

Worth a look  ???

I had a tapping sound for ages when i accelarated it was driving me mad but it was not there when i just reved the car not moving.
Mine turned out to be a bracket under the fuel intake manifold a Mechanic had snapped of the bolt in the engine block and the metal bracket was tapping against it the engine block. I went back and back all i was told was its a heat sheild idiots and but the time i found the snapped bolt from the braket it was 6 months later and the Mech guy said it was nothing to do with them, Il not be going back to that numpty again

Drove me nuts for ages this.

I would say its a leaking exhaust manifold gasket....
