Title: Fault code can't be read
Post by: V8S on 20 November 2007, 14:25:34
Hi all,

In my other threads I had identified and asked about two problems.

1) EML comes on every so often, resulting in very low power.

2) Bend in rear suspension / wishbone / etc screwing up camber setup (suggested by Tony at WIM).

The car is now at the garage with the following result:

1) The fault code can't be read by their two machines, nor with the one they borrowed from another garage. He suspects some kind of connection problem. He suggests that when the car comes down to have the work (see below) done he will sort it then.

2) With the help of Tony at WIM, the mechanic looked but could not identify a bend - it being too small to be visual. He suggests replacing the whole of the back end on the troubled side, but he needs to source parts which will probably take until late next week.

Any comments?

Firstly any idea what could be causing connection problems? Are there different versions of Tech 2? Any questions I should ask?

Secondly, why is everything in the motor industry so slooooooooooow. Why does it take over a week to get some parts and do the work? A few days I could understand but it's not like the car is very old or rare.

Was it a real tech2 or a generic reader?

our 2.2 should be OBD2 complinant, borrowed a reader, nothing, just 'connection error'

Cheapo tech2, or the real thing both work fine though.

Aye, I think most generic readers won't work on the Omegas - I've had three tried on mine.

Apparently it's the proper Tech2 equipment (about £5.5k worth?), not generic.

Rules that out then!

Don't know if there is a fuse relating to the socket anywhere  :-/

Indeed... or maybe a loose connection to it?

There is a power connection on the diagnostic socket, and there is a fuse that protects it. Don't have any details at hand but I've seen it on the wiring diagrams.

I doubt a garage would have a real Tech2, more likely a generic type such as those by Snap Off etc...

I'm having the same problem with my 3.0 elite. tried cheapo readers to a tech2 which cost over 10k and still not reading. I would be interested to find out what is causing this. Going to have a look this weekend after is change the dispack. I take it the Haynes manual would show the wiring diagram for it?

I asked him specifically if it was Tech2 and he assured me it was.

Does anyone have any more info about the power connection and the fuse for it? Hopefully I can check this myself.

Can't see any mention in my owners manual or in the fuse box. I don't have the Haynes manual as they do not have an issue for the facelift it seems.

Does the real Tech2 boot?  If so, the power to diags socket is fine.

Given the number of references to cheapo tech 2 on here even, the mechanic maybe thinks he has the real thing.

As proven recently even a decent Sun diagnostic unit will pick up the codes if configured correctly but anything less does not have the capability to read the emmisions codes, don't know about any of the other codes used.

Its likely that the contacts in the diag socket have been damaged by a 'cheepo tech 2' or similar, the real tool has very thin, flat contacts, I suspect that the alternatives use thicker or square pins which damage the socket.

the guy that checked the car told me it was an all singing all dancing tech2 system but who knows. When I plug the cheapo reader into it it looks like it is powering up and counts to 4 then comes up with Error.
