Title: Correct type of anti-freeze to use

Hello all,

Just looking through the TIS and wondered what people's opinions are regarding the particular type of anti-freeze to use.  Mine's a 2.0ltr '99 and the TIS says up to MY 2001 (What's MY 2001?) to use Blue and after that Red.

I've bought the red long life anti-freeze from Halfrauds and am now wondering if I should take this back and get the blue one instead?

As long as you flush the system well the red will be fine. In fact it's far superior to the blue stuff. :y

Vx's own Red can be mixed with blue without issue. Its pretty cheap for red as well ;)

That's good to know, cos it's in Emma's MX now (previously blue / green). :y

Think I flushed it pretty well though.

Best way to add it is to flush the system by your preferred method, drain as far as possible and add the correct amount for your coolant capacity neat - to give 50% concentration. Then top the system up with water.

If you pre-mix it you'll find there is always some water in there so you can't 100% fill it with the mixture and it'll end up too weak.

So take the red back to Halfrauds and get red from Vauxhall?  Is it cheaper from Vauxhall dealer or are we talking vauxspares?

I wouldn't worry too much now. For future reference the vauxhall dealers sell red coolant at a reasonable price, especially on trade club.

It will probably say if it's not compatible with other types of coolant but if you fill the system with clean water, run for a few minutes then drain, and repeat this process a couple of times it will have removed all significant traces of the old coolant anyway. Do this with the heater on maximum heat.

Some reds either congeal with traces of blue, or turn slightly corrosive to the seals.

Vx red is about £10 retail from dealer for 5l
