Title: vec cam covers
Post by: Tab on 23 November 2007, 00:05:15
hi folks, i'm gonna go get a pair of rocker gaskets tommorrow and wondered if it's worth picking up a pair of second hand alloy covers to replace the plastic ones that mine apparentley has.

i've heard that they're a lot better as they don't warp.

anybody else got them on their engines?

I think the general consensus is that blocked breathers, rather than warped covers are the usual culprit for cam cover gasket failure so be sure to check the breathers. However, metal covers won't hurt. There are issues with the location of the oil filler, however.

The plastic ones don't warp.  Myth put about by mechanics who don't know how to fit them

ah right, so it'll be ok to just change the gaskets then as long as the breathers are cleaned.

thanks people.

The other problem with the Vectra covers is if the breathers are blocked with the plastic cam covers the cam gasket fails which is quite an easy job. With the Vectra covers if the cam covers gaskets can't fail another gasket/seal ie crankshaft seal will and I know which one I would rather change.
