Title: autobox goes in limp mode
Post by: comrade on 21 November 2007, 22:23:24
Hello everybody! My 2.0 96' Omega has a quite annoying problem - autobox doesn't want to shift gears automaticly! When I start the engine "automatic gearbox" appears on display and I have to shift gears manually. When I bought the car it already had this problem, but it only appeared once in 4-5 starts and turning the engine off and on again solved the problem each time. It got much worse after i've cleaned the breathers and icv ( i also readjusted the throttle cable because idle revs were too high after the clean ). Sometimes when the engine is warm it doesn't go limp straight away, but after several mins of driving. Also when it happens I can hear a relay clicking somewhere behind the dashboard and the revs start to go up and down for about a minute. I've changed the autobox fluid but that didn't help at all. Maybe I've messed up something during the icv clean but I have no idea what?? Does anybudy have any suggestions what it can be?

Could be a number of things.  Could be an engine problem causing gearbox to limp, or could be a gearbox problem.

Do paperclip test to check for engine faults.

And it really isn't doing the gearbox much good - the limp home is for emergency use only!

I've tried to do the paperclip but the car doesn't react to inserted wire at all :( EML light doesn't show up.

I suspect previous owner removed to hide a problem  >:(

Is it difficult to do it? Haynes manual says that a steering wheel needs to be removed as well and i don't really want to deal with the airbag.

No, its easy to do and you dont need to remove the steering wheel.

Search the maintenance guides section for details.

I would also double check the connections to the throttle pot

Have you checked the oil level? Try here : http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1193925535/0 and http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1195475008
My friend had the same in his 2.5 TDS. There was no slip (it was not going to "N"). The gearbox was going to limp mode more and more often. 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear clutch (rings) were changed and everything is ok now. Cost? £300 in Poland (small and cheap garage) so I assume it might be £700 in here (or they will do a full recondition for £1000 + VAT).
I asked about mine: First £50 +VAT for computer check, and then they can fix it. Price? If that's a thrust washer, then they want to change clutches as well (they say that broken thrust washer damage clutches), and it's a full recondition which is £1000+VAT.

On my old omega I had a gear box problem where I had to manually change gear. It turned out to be the alternater over charging, can't remember the fault code or the message display.....mike
