Title: Rocker gaskets help
Post by: RichB on 30 September 2007, 20:09:28
Hi guys.

I have just noticed the rocker gasket is leaking on the drivers side to the rear, it looks like a job that I will perhaps struggle with. I would give it a go but I think it would end up taking me days and I dont have access to another car :(  Would anyone be interested in replacing the gaskets for me and cleaning the breather system for me? Also would that be a good time to replace leads and plugs etc? If so then how long would this job take? I live in East Leake which is about 10 miles south of Notts city centre.

Cheers,

Richard

Rich,

If you could get your car up to stoke on trent , i would help you. I did mine , im not a mechanic but did it in 3hrs , and it kicked over first time.

You will need the following :

Rocker Gaskets
Black Sealant
6x Plugs
Carb Cleaner
WD40
Leads

Should take no more than 4hrs and would be a big improvement.

Also you would need plenty of rags (especially if plug wells are full)

I have all the tools

Yeah , sorry forgot the o rings   ;)

The gaskets cost me £25.50 per side (£51 in total)
Sealant cost me £6
O rings cost me £0.17p each
Plugs are about £13 i think

In addition, seeing as the breather will need doing, worth having the breather to plenum seal, the throttle body gaskets, the o rings for the breathe rbox etc as well.

Cheers guys, I dont know but it looks kind of more difficult than what im used to doing.  Bit worried that I will end up without a car for work!  Half the problem is knowing what bits I need exactly, would probably get half way through and realise I have not got an important bit.  OmegaLord thanks for the offer, sounds like it might be a good plan.  Did you clean all the breathers when you did yours?  All sounds complicated.  I think ill start getting the bits I need so am ready to do the job when got the time / someone to help me...

Cheers,

Richard

Rich,

I cleaned the breathers on mine yeah. Most werent that bad but where it goes into the y shaped hose it was pretty bad there.

Runs much better now.

Its up to you , the offer is there if you choose to accept. If not then good luck with getting it done  ;)

Wel a bog run up to stoke on trent up the M1 would make the engine pretty hot , so perhaps half hour. But we could be dismantling stuff in the mean time like the plenum and taking the scuttle panel off.

Well that would be cool then, I will start ringing the vauxhall garage and get the parts together and then sort out when will be best to do it.  The smell is making me feel sick when driving now :S  Gonna get the gaskets etc and a set of plugs and leads to change while its all off.

Right then I have got all the required parts to change the gaskets and clean the breathers now, except Vauxhall being idiots only gave me 15 of the o rings and said they didnt order any more cause they hardly use any and thought I could just re use one of the old ones  ::)  So will I be able to re use any of the old ones or will I need another one?  Also my mum has just rang to say she has bought a box of 500 assorted o rings from a show somewhere, shall I just see if there is one the same size amongst them?  Hopefully im gonna get it done tomorrow, anyone local fancy giving me a hand at all?  I live near Loughborough / Nottingham.

Cheers,

Richard

That would be cool, Vauxhall have managed to mess up my order though, just checked it against the list and they have ordered the gaskets for the breathers wrong.  Have you done the gaskets before?  Did you need to change the gaskets for the breathers when you cleaned them?  Got your PM  :y
