Title: Auto gearbox - Kettering area
Post by: mickeydeane on 26 November 2007, 09:52:16
Hi

I am having problems with autobox on my omega - can anyone recommend a mechanic/garage in the Kettering/wellingborough area who would be able to correctly diagnose and sort out the problem - it sounds like its the gear selector switch (sticks in 3rd when in drive)

cheers

Hi

I used to use an auto specialist guy in Littlethorpe for auto box oil and filter changes before I moved. Can't remember the name but its not too far from you really. Come off the M1 at Fosse Park, head for Narborough, turn right across the railway and the place is in Littlethorpe old village on the right.

have you tried changing the oil and filter to see if that improves things? There is plenty of info on here on how to do it and where to get the gaskets and filter (approx £38 in total) plus the Dexron 111 oil.

What are the symptoms with gearbox? selector switch is quite easily fitted by any comprtent mechanic, best getting second hand, new quite expensive. Been down that road recently myself.

Got your message, Switch cost me £79 got it through Patrs Gateway got next day delivery but shop around probably get it cheaper, Dealer wanted £235 but I beleive same switch may be fitted to other cars also according to posts read on this form. Someone else may be able to advise you on this, hope this helps.

Sticking in 3rd just means its in limp, and may or may not be selector switch

I have called two garages fixing gearboxes, and was told that it cost ca 1000 pounds + VAT to fix any gearbox! Do you know any other garage/shop around Reading (radius 50-70 miles) where I can buy a second hand gearbox or fix mine?

Try Allens Garage in Tadley (that's only 12 miles or so from you) & ask for Gareth
