Title: Autobox chose the wrong gear!!
Post by: PaulW on 15 December 2007, 01:31:50
Just had the car out for a thrash, sport mode on, pulled off, booted it, 1st fine, 2nd... nope 4th... Engine bogged down like a madman, about 1 second later it then found 2nd and carried on...

Fluid change time on the box??  Considering it was last done around 10k miles ago...

And no the TC light didn't come on, and it felt completely different to how that feels too

Well since you asked.... ;)

It's quite normal, they always choose the wrong gear. Imagine someone else is driving your car, and you are in the passenger footwell, unable to see anything outside like the road conditions, let alone what's ahead. Your job is to select the gear that the car should be in, based only on what you can observe from inside the car. Chances are you'd get it wrong quite a lot too -- welcome to the world of the ECU controlled gearbox :D

Sorry but I was asked :P

BTW I'm going to digress a little here although staying on a similar note -- it seems the day that a properly automated car drives on our roads is coming closer, with the results of the recent DARPA challenge. Not only will these cars be able to change gear themselves properly (by reading the road and traffic conditions, as well as anticipating future events) they can completely drive themselves amongst traffic, normal road controls/rules and pedestrians! So it seems some of you guys' dream, of being able to drive somewhere without having to actually drive, will be realised sooner rather than later :o Scary stuff!

So long as they don't panic and wander all over the road when I pass them in the Westfield at 7K RPM, and no-one makes me drivesit in one I won't mind. In fact I'll consider it an improvement!
