I have a noise which seems to emanate from below the steering wheel, down towards pedals. It has always been there but is now very horrible. Very hard to describe but easy to reproduce. It occurs at high revs, also occurs in the following situation: sat in 3rd gear at say 50mph, waiting to overtake or pass, noise not present when foot released from accelerator, noise returns when accelerator pressed enough to hold the current speed (1st 1cm of depression), pass the 1cm and noise goes, then foot down to pass and the noise is nasty.
The noise: Best description I can give is it is like the fins on a water pump scraping on the inside of a metal pipe. Very metallic and grating.
I hope that is clear enough to begin a diagnosis.

Just to add: No performance loss with it and no noticable vibrations etc. just a lot of horrible noise

lack of gearbox oil maybe? open the bonnet and see if you can hear it any louder.

or could be a roller about to fail on the cambelt..

Could it be heat shields under the car :question :question

Check your engine mounts and try rocking the engine to see if you
have excessive movement.
The situation you describe, sounds as if you are getting the noise when
you apply torque (a twisting moment) to your engine and drivetrain.
If movement is excessive, you'll be twisting your engine, gearbox, exhaust
and propshaft out of alignment. The engine, gearbox and exhaust can vibrate
against fixed parts of the car if contact is made, and the propshaft can rotate
against another fixed part.
Check for rubbing/witness marks on your exhaust and propshaft.
I had exactly the same noise on my old diesel Merc years ago when I took
it touring round the South of France. When going up steep hills, it sounded like
someone was underneath trying to cut their way in with a chainsaw. :o
What I found was the right hand engine mount bolt had worked loose, and when
heavy torque was applied (going up steep hills), various bits were meeting, vibrating,
and rubbing against each other.

if I understand the noise definition correct ,
same mine..we take out the dash two times for that ..nope..
more interesting was the noise appeared below 7-8 celcius when the weather become cold mostly in the mornings (last year)..when the
car become hot noise was lost..
finally it turned out to be alternator bearings worn and making that noise..find it only by chance..

I think the alternator bearings theory sounds good. I will have a look around at all the suggestions today and post back any findings.

My Sunbeam once bust both engine mounts (ended up buying new).
Pulling away in first engine jumped out of mounts and something was rubbing nastily.
I temporarily fixed it by dumping clutch in reverse.
Bought a couple of new mounts very soon after

obviously i didn't mean to have the bonnet open while driving ::)

Exhaust heat shields....
Jubilee Clip in the correct place should fix....
Or a spot of mig weld, if you have the kit....

I am 99% certain that this noise is coming from the power steering pump. I slipped the belt off today and rotated by hand and the noise was replicated at a lower and slower level.
Is the pump serviceable in any way? If not how easy is it to change?

Is there sufficient fluid in the system?
I have just this weekend changed a pump on a 2.5, if your layout is the same as mine it's quite straightforward.
If you still have the secondary air injection fitted you will need to remove the valve to improve access to the pump.
Slacken the three pump pulley srews before you remove the belt, then belt & pulley off. There is a bracket to the left of the pump that supports the SAI valve & a/c pipe, remove that bracket, four screws.
Two hoses go to the pump, one has hose clip, the other a screwed in pressure fitting, try to drain fliud before undoing and protect the a/c pulley from leaking ATF.
There should only be one screw left holding the pump on.
I did look at the cost of a new replacement, at £200 I quickly stopped looking, try for a second hand one.
It should be possible to remove the rear face of the pump, it is held in with a large circlip, whether you could obtain parts, or if it's worth the trouble is unknown.
