Title: Washer jets!
Post by: donut82 on 19 December 2007, 18:08:03
Cleaned the windscreen on the way to work, no problems. Came back home and just got dribs and drabs, out of water....obviously.

Checked the bottle and it was half full but topped it up anyway but can hardly get any water out of the jets. I have to keep flicking the indicator stalk to get drabs of water but hold it back and all I can hear is the pump, so now I just have the wipers going like mad and smearing the screen.

Had a go at jets with a pen to clear and blockage and looked at the pipe as best as I can going from the bottle to the jets and everything seems fine.

Am I missing something blatantly obvious? :-?

I think there is a filter in/on the tank which may have clogged.  Its unlikely both nozzles would get blocked at the same time.

Take out the jets and reverse blow them

Check pump to ensure it is pushing water to jets..easiest way is to split pipe where it comes out from beneath pollen filter end of scuttle panel grille. If water is being pumped at that point blockage is in jets on bonnet and best thing is a sewing needle or pin to clear jets...if no water at resonable pressuer is evident at pipe then pump filter is almost certainly blocked with crud.
You then need to remove the washer pump from the filler tank behind front bumper which you can get to from above..inside hole when pumps is out is a small filter which gets blocked up..that should sort your problems

As IanS says there's a filter in the bottle. If you remove the grill (pre facelift cars) and pull the pump from the tank - a push fit - you'll see that the grommet it sits in has a little filter built in. It looks like a mini waste paper basket!  ;D Clean all the sh1te from it and rebuild.  :y

Just be carefull in this cold weather when pulling washer tube from pumps & washer nozzles as it's easier to break the 'nipple' off .... ooer! :o Hot water or your (wife's/girl friends) hair dryer will soften the tube if you really need to remove it.

OK, been out and checked everything at its pointing to a blockage in the filter cause theres hardly any water coming through the system.

So can someone do me a step by step on how to get into the pump filter as A) I'm abit retarded and B) I don't want to break the bloody thing, which I have a tendency to do :)

Open driver's door
Pull bonnet lift .....  ;D
Your washer bottle lives at the front of the car, between the head lights. I assume it's a face lift car, so there's no grille to remove. The smaller pump is the screen washer pump (if you have HID lights you'll have a bigger pump too) and as said is just a push fit into the grommet/filter in the washer bottle. Ease the pump out of the bottle, remove the grommet/filter & wash the cr4p out of it. Rebuild.

LOL  ;D I was a while back since I did mine, AFAIR I didn't remove the bottle to get to the pump. Just prise the pump out gently. I'd wait till it was light though. ;)
I think I need to have another look aqt mine as when I tried to wash my screen on the motorway the other day - I could see f*** all! :o Plenty of wipers but sod all water, all as I was about to join the M6. So far it's fixed itself, but a proper flush through won't go amiss.

pump can fail also..I changed mine..

also normal city water clog the jets in time  ..necessary to use pure water (no lime) or one with antifreeze mixture..

If its cold as a cold thing, they may be frozen as no additive  (50/50 mix preferred) if its as cold as a witches t*t outside....

And your jet heaters are also fubar..... :y

If the jets neet attention as well, the only thing I find works well is fine picture hanging wire, thin enough to have a good clean around with, pins and similar often too fat

You need to also blast them clean from the outside - gunge gets trapped by the jets and cannot get out.

Facelift ones are easy to clean

but not coolant antifreeze, the proper screenwash stuff..

why am I not surprised to hear that you've changed your pump cem.. ;)  You must have the newest Omega in the whole world from all the things you've replaced on it.

Excuse me for being completely thick, but would I be right in saying that the two items circled below are the washer pumps for my headlights and windscreen?

Assuming that they are, I have two questions.

1: Do you need to remove the pipes from the pump to remove it?
2: How do they actually come out?  Vertically straight up or horizontally straight out at 90 degrees from the bottle?

I got over my fear of breaking something and managed to get them out.  They pull UP vertically.  I found I had to remove the head lamp washer hose from the pump in order to be able to twist it to get it out but managed to get the windscreen washer pump out without removing the pipe.

Anyway, loads of grunge in the filter, which I removed and all is working perfectly again.  It's the small jobs that give you great satisfaction! :-)

Well done! As said before, the only thing to be careful of is breaking the nipple off the pump, particularly in this cold weather. I did that years ago with my Manta., & Vauxhall wanted wanted more than an apprentice could afforf for a new one!  :o

I can confirm that if you try to remove your washer jets that they can fall apart quite easily, both mine did :'( On the plus side, my washers are super even if I'm £28 odd down on the deal :(

thanx for the info richard h. see you are a newbie like me. mine packed up yesterday ( low level warning then sod all ) and been watching posts to see which one was which and how to remove them. might be able to see out of windscreen and rear screen from now on! not much fun driving at night in fog with smeared screen. :y

Only fitted to some prefacelift. Not sure if they ever got fitted to facelift, as their location is better from a wind chill point of view.

Cheers for that, this is a fantastic knowledge base.

So I can see from the wires to the jets on mine that they are heated.

When and how are they activated ?

With the wash action ? temperature controlled or perhaps when the heated mirrors and screen are on ?

I'd need to check, but I think it is whenever the engine is running...

Yep. Heated washers are fed whenever ignition's on, and my facelift has them.
