Title: EGR valve 2 High voltage
Post by: chrisdb on 19 December 2007, 17:41:06
Hi Having to 133 code I cleaned the EGR valve as advised, but no difference. Can I just check:-

- The valve to check is the one that is on the righ hand side above the exhuast manifold with the big union nut at the bottom. I saw some posts suggesting it was at the back of the engine...

- Using a multimeter, can I check the voltages of the wires going into the valve?

- Any other way to test the valve itself?

Cheers
Chris

Surprised that no one has jumped in on this one.  :(

V6 EGR is lefthand side (looking into engine bay), corrugated steel pipe connects it to the exhaust manifold.

Voltage High implies an open-circuited motor or a break in the wiring or faulty connector. Apart from the obvious checks on wiring condition the only solution is to replace it. I suggest you find one from a breaker, going to be v expensive otherwise.

Right hand side as you sit in the driver's seat? Then yes. Left hand when facing the engine from front. It's a cylinder that connects a pipe from the exhaust manifold to the plenum.

Unless I'm mistaken the fault code sounds electrical, in that the ECU is complaining about the circuit connecting the valve to the ECU, NOT the mechanical functioning of the valve.

I would take the connector off the valve and measure the resistance of the valve actuator just in case the coil is open or short circuit. I don't know the spec. of the device but I'd expect resistance to be a few tens of ohms. Check the connector is clean and maybe use a bit of contact cleaner on it in case. Check that it clicks fully home and see if the fault is still showing.

If it is, you probably need to trace the wiring back to the ECU to try and find a break.

Thanks guys. Checked it all out and can't find anything so will replace. You're right - they are expensive new!!!

Cheers lads

OK, fitted brand new EGR valuve but no difference. I will strip down and follow the wire as far back as I can. Just a sanity check - am I right in thinking that once the fault is cleared, the EML will stop coming on even though the fault code will still be stored? And, will I cause any damage if I drive the car?

Thanks

That is correct....and no it wont cause any damage being EGR related.

All fixed now, thanks guys. I stripped everything dowm again and found that I had missed a connection comepletly - the wire that plugs into the bottom of the air intake was hidden far out of site so I did not spot it until I stipped it down.

Cheers
