Title: Arrrrgh help
Post by: vauxsull on 22 December 2007, 13:38:29
Car has suddenly deceided to miss-fire today to the point of nearly cutting out. The engine management light hasn't come on which is why deaers cant plug tec-2 into it
main dealer says it's more likely to be plugs and leads and maybe coil too and if so would cost around £600 ish to do job lot. anything i could look for before i limp to the dealers?
cheers.......

They dont need a fault code to plug tech 2 in........tech 2 does far more than read fault codes.

Sound like you realy need to avoid that dealer, they dont sound compitent.

I would suspect coil pack given that

a) Its suddenly come on
b) It sounds like possibly 2 cylinders not firing (unless the miss fire is being over stated).

The coil packs are about 80 quid and less than an hour to fit, can be done by most home mechanics

But, first off all, pull a few plug leads off to check for oil in the plug wells.

would the coil pack pack in just like that? fine one second then not the next?
there's know way i'm paying Vauxhalls the price they're asking. £186 plus v.a.t for leads alone.

Hi, could you limp to Widnes, if so try Asautocare, his web address is asautocare.co.uk, he is excellent, and a Vauxhall independant specialist with a proper tech2.
p.s. he has a friendly transporter driver who does great rates

Vauxhall quoted me over £500 about 4 years ago when I had the same problem. I changed the DIS pack but I'm still on the same HT leads. They quote to replace leads just to cover their 4r$e.

You can get a set of Bosch HT leads for around £40.
The coil pack is around £70-80.
Cam cover gaskets are about £50.

If you've got a small amount of oil in the plug well it might cause a misfire or you might get away with it.

MarkDTM is a serious expert so if he suspects the coil pack I'd go with that. Coils can just fail and on the Omega there are actually 3 coils in the pack so if a coil fails you lose two cylinders.

I think your main problem is the coil.

If you decide to get the lot fixed a lot of the labour is duplicated. With the cam covers off changing the DIS pack and HT leads is a doddle - like 15 mins.

Good grief, v incompitent dealers.

Visual and resistance checks should be done on leads before blind replacement.

And £380 for cam cover gaskets? They can keep it. Get the parts yourself for £55 and it's an easy DIY job. Also easy to get to the coil pack with the plenum etc off.

First of all you need to read the fault codes though.

And if it's a 3.0 or a 2.5 you can read the codes on the dash, by using a paperclip!

The £380 is for the covers not just the gaskets. there is oil in one plug hole but didn't think it was worth trying to checking others due to accessibility. where would i get leads for that price from? Halfords? thought they had to be specialist leads??
anyone in this forum who could do this job for me please drop me a line..
I live in North Wales though......
