Although when driving, both lights seem about the same, when I look at them from the front, one seems to have a "softer" type of light, slight pink hue to it.
Any ideas, is the lamp on its way out?

Sounds it. Trouble is, the way they degrade over time, you'll need to replace both....

Is there any info on how long these units should last, i know it depends on how often there used but i thought there may be an average time span

The bulbs are replaceable .. I got mine from here :
http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/home.php
£41 inc postage and VAT for a pair .. :) when I got mine .. I see they are now asking for £69.99 on their website .. but if you go through ebay
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HID-D2S-XENON-GAS-DISCHARGE-BULBS-6000K-UPGRADE-PAIR_W0QQitemZ260193793123QQihZ016QQcategoryZ72235QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
same firm much cheaper !! :)

Jimbob is worth asking, I seem to recall he replaced his, not as one had failed, but because they weren't as bright as they could be...

Autobulbsdirect off ebay for me, just checked ebay receipt, £42 delivered :y
I had compared my output (the MV6) to a few other meegas, and well down on light
I was starting to look around for solutions, rather than Vauxhalls £100 ish per bulb!
Then one went, a very weird pinky light.
Elite Pete lent me a bulb to get me through that weeks MOT, sods law!
Got the pair and a huge improvement :y I bought the 6000K which I thought were going to be the best option, but in hindsite I think the 4300K's illuminate better.
Also being a prefacelift MV6, it sits a bit lower, I think this (along with the headlight washers) means it doesn't illuminate as well as some. My lights also point quite high, thanks to an Adjustment from Mark, which made a big difference.
Colours :
4300K : Yellower Light, best output
6000K : White Light, looks brightest, but see above
8000K : Bluey Light, Looks 'nicest' but not very effective
>8000K : Purpley, Show use really
Trouble is, 6000's seem the most popular, so the 4300's seem more expensive :(
