Done 500+ miles in 2 days without a hitch, this morning the beast just won't start ... turns over fine but nothing happens .. no EML flashing (immoblisor seems ok) ... paperclip test gives 12, 31 ..which I believe is normal for a non-running V6.
Not allowed to start messing at the moment as we have to leave to deliver pressies 40 miles away ... fun in the clit .. NOT .. hopefully will be able to check for a spark before it gets dark ... but as I can't get any spares for 3 days I guess I'm stumped anyway ....
Ideas anyone ..... ?? :(

Initial thought is crank sensor, but I'd have expected a code.
Cambelt ok? ::)

Has it been started and moved a couple of feet - to let another car out of a drive - and then stopped while it was still on 'choke'? A common occurance around Christmas time.
-
Try cranking it at WOT..
-
Try cranking it with a small amount of throttle to start......cranking at WOT will stop the injectors firing which may help if its thought to be flooded.
-
Andy B ... it has not moved since we got home last night after 500+ miles in 2 days without a hitch .. :(
James ... WOT makes no difference
Mark ... Partial throttle makes no difference
The only thing I noticed.. which may not be new.. just I noticed it ... on initial rotation on the starter the rev counter is "flicking" to about 1000 rpm momentarily then "wobbles" just off the stop whilst the engine turns on the starter motor.
As the only "fault" is no RPM signal.. sensible when engine stopped .. could it also be no RPM signal when trying to run ?? If this is so then its possibly a crank sensor ???
Next problem is ... when do stealers re-open ?? I'm tempted to just go for a crank sensor and hope ... especially as I'm supposed to be using the beast to tow the 'van for our New Year holiday away !! :(
Any other ideas very gratefully accepted .. especially if you know how to fix a suspect sensor on a temporary basis !!! :)
-
No way of fixing a hall sensor, I'm afraid...
-
How about Wiggle The Wire!
Accepted wisdom is that it is the wire more often than the sensor. It didn't fix my 2.0 completely but Wiggle The Wire took a cutout every 20 miles or so out to once in a blue moon. Not ideal for towing the family holiday with but you might find a sweet spot then you can tie wrap it up?

Bandit .. good idea ... perhaps ...!! :)
I'll try tomorrow in day light ..if it gets it going on a temp basis its worth it ..
Thanks :)

That happened to us with our Carlton Gsi

Update ... No spark .. and "Wiggle the Wire" - well as much as I can reach for the crank sensor - has made no difference.
As I have no fault codes is it likely to be the crank sensor ?? I would sort of expect some stored 19 code (he said sounding knowledgeable .. actually I've read so many threads on site my eyes are bulging !! )
Other area is DIS pack but that was replaced 20,000 miles ago .... :(
How do I differentiate between the 2 ?
I'm hoping the stealers are open 27th and that I get the right parts first time, due to holiday on 28th ... :(
so any advice readily and willingly listened to !!
-
I would use the time before the Parts department opens and you commit your cash on a hunch to going through all the simple stuff like fuses (in the fusebox and engine bay) and checking everything is physically connected. I bet this will turn out to be something quite silly like a fuel pump relay, fuse or something coming loose. I take it your not an RAC/AA member?

Todays efforts .. :( Passenger side plugs drowning in oil .. :( so in the process of doing the rocker gaskets.. luckily I had them ready to do in the new year along with the breather clean stuff.
2 questions ...
1. Guide says to remove the cable carrier and place to one side as shown .... who wrote that .. Haynes ?? :) Just how the hell do you get it out of the way !
2. Would one side drowning in oil be enough to stop the thing starting .. I don't see why I got no spark on the drivers side front.. which is the plug I checked ?
All advice gratefuly accepted .. I'll do the drivers side cover now and check back for answers to Q1 ... eventually !
-
That wouldn't stop all plugs firing - I still think there's either a crank sensor problem, a DIS problem, or a fault with the wiring to it.
Have you checked your fuses too?
-
I assume the battery is well charged......the dials jumping sudgests otherwise.

Latest update .. :(
Run out of light so had to stop, also it rained all over the printouts so had to reprint them in order to follow instructions ... may I offer the following ideas for amendment to the howto ??? :)
1. How the ***** do you "remove the cable tray" ... never managed it .. but eventually got the cover back on ... TWICE .. see note 2 .. :(
2. Suggest that "replace oil filler spout as soon as possible" be added to instructions. This will stop a dropped screw emulating the "Dam Busters" and dissapearing exactly dead centre down the orofice .. thus requiring the whole damned cover to be removed again just to rescue said screw. And of course it is on the "difficult" side of the engine .. see note 1 ....
As to where we are .... 5 out of 6 plugholes had oil in them, 2 were small amounts (1/4 inch on plug cover) the three on the passenger side were swimming, front two couldn't even see the top of the plug.
The old gaskets were not Vx IMHO.. much thinner than the new ones, and the person who fitted them had spread sealant all along them as well, not just on the bends. I have a feeling that when I paid for them to be done last year they may have just been sealed and not replaced ... words will be said to garage .. but proving it will be hard. O-rings were totally hard and shattered on removal.. so they were pretty old as well
All cleaned up and gaskets done, can't replace the leads as no where open .. am going to suck it and see.
Breather box and pipes cleaned .. no where near as much crud as I expected, certainly not blocked.
Tomorrow will be a plenum/throttle body clean then refit and see what happens ...
Marks DTM - battery fine .. turns over a treat, it is only the tacho that jumps and only on initial turnover.
JamesV6 - All fuses in both compartments by the battery area have been checked with a multimeter, I haven't checked those in the footwell yet.
Anyone .... opinion on this theory/hope (prayer??)... as the ignition is "wasted spark" ie sparks to a pair of plugs even though only 1 is on compression stroke .... would the oil be sufficient to "short" the HT such that no spark actually gets to the plug ?? electricity taking the path of least resistance. This might explain the lack of spark I got and the fact that there are no EML warnings ?? or am I clutching at straws ??
Anyway .. tomorrow will tell ..... I wonder what time the stealers open .. if they do .. :(
-
sounds like dis pac has gone done due to oil in plug wells bud !! ;)
-
Next question .... Plenum .. right at the back centre is a "device" which has a vacuum actuator attached, goes to electrical connector back right of plenum. The bit that has the electical connection has a "U" shaped air pipe to the vaccuum actuator. The connection of this U pipe to the electrical actuator is buggered and looks like it has been araldited ... trying to read the part no it looks like 90166241 ... what is the correct name for this bit please ... stealers are open this afternoon and I want to get one of these and a crank sensor.
Daft Q .. would this broken vac pipe cause the non-starting problem .. ? don't see it myself .. :(
-
Sounds like the solenoid valve for the rear multiram. Might be worth getting one off a breaker as I imagine it'll be expensive from the stealers. I can't see it causing starting problems but it'll introduce an air leak which won't be helping matters.

Thanks Kevin .. this is the offending part .. and its stealers or nowt today I'm afraid ..

Also .. can someone confirm that this is the correct connector for the Crank Sensor ??with all the wires and plugs at the back of the engine I'm not too certain ... cowardice I know ....

I think the crank sensor connector (and the multiway connector that drives the injectors) are normally clipped together and they fit on that metal bracket in the foreground so if that's the case the crank sensor connector is the smaller of the two (3 pin).

Super job .. the injector plug and that small one DO go on that bracket .. so I'l go with you on this one. thanks for that ... makes sense at last :)
When SWMBO gets back from the sales guess I'm off to the stealers just need to work out which one of the two types I have from the howto ..
many thanks :)

Saga continues ... mixed news... :(
1. Got new bits from stealers .. but can't fit the crank sensor, there is a "protusion" on the oil filter housing that gets in the way, all I can do is move the old sensor out 1/4" and the end hits this casting, I don't have the room with these axle stands - I'm working at arms stretch already - to get inside the filter housing to release the bolt and rotate the housing the 1" it needs.
2. Having got stopped there I decided to put everything back together, all nice and clean, and see what happens .......
She fired up virtually instantly, I let the fuel line pressurise, she turned over 3 times and away she went :y :y
3. Bit tappety which I put down to hydraulic lifters being empty so let her run whilst listening for air leaks and anything else ........ :'(
Passenger side rocker gasket bottom edge started to drip after 3 minutes ... 1 drip every 3 seconds... :(
So it needs to come off again, I've got as far as the plenum off before it got dark, so we try again in the morning ... :(
What I do need PLEASE is advice on how to remove that damned cable tray which just gets in the way, and is probably the reason the gasket is not seated properly, as I fought my way around it I probably dislodged the gasket. I cannot for the life of me open it, undo it anything.. it is just a solid mass getting in the way.... any ideas very gratefully taken.
Pressure is now off slightly as a mate has offered the use of a Discovery so we can go away for the New Year as planned, but I'd rather get this thing sorted tomorrow morning if I can.
So .. any one any ideas on the cable tray please ... pretty please ... pretty please with sprinkles ?? :)
-
If you unscrew the cable tray mountings you should be able to remove the lid of the tray, remove all the wiring from it and take the cable tray away leaving the wiring in place, which you can just clip out of the way, or unplug from all devices and drape over the scuttle.
The crank sensor wire is the part that fails so I guess that moving it around has (temporarily) effected a cure. It'll be back though. Sounds like you need to loosen off the oil filter mounting. :(

Thanks for all the advice, job done :) see update in "Cable Tray" :)
