Title: Stripped sump plug thread
Post by: Shackeng on 05 January 2008, 19:01:22
My 2.5td (BMW engine) has a stripped sump plug thread. (Last serviced by Vauxhall!) It has an M12 x 1.5 plug. Has anyone replaced this with an oversize, and if so which size.

Thanks

OK Guys, I just drilled it out and tapped it to take an M14 x1.5 plug, only an hour's job with the oil change, and the larger plug will make it less likely to strip in future. Incidentally I used a 12mm drill rather than the recommended 12.5mm, and it was the ideal size in ally, probably 12.5mm would be OK in steel.
On this subject, I rather like the look of the Femco replacement sump plugs, with an integral drain, especially for ally sumps. Has anyone any experience of them?

Cheers

I still stripped mine after retapping. And I used a torque wrench (set to 25Nm).

I will be trying those quick drain ones when I next change oil...

Hmm. They look interesting.

I wonder if one could be fitted to each gearbox sump too?

fitted a femco to last td. (not the low profile one). Took the whole thing out over a country yump. was looking at the idiot lights afterwards & stopped a soon as light came on. motor ok after.
If your current plug is still in , I suggest pila oil pump, suck out thru dipstick, c60 Euro, job done while changing filter, no grovelling needed.

Did wonder the problem with it being low.  Never had any faith in sucking oil out....

May just have to put the undertray back on for protection...

 :o

Maybe not then.

I'm still tempted for the Westfield and MX5 because it's a pain to get under them and the plugs are both on the side of the sump.

I originally bought for my ski boat. Most marine engines use pump out & are expected to last forever. However with 4.5k oil changes it's a godsend. 22.5k this year.

Why is everyone talking about 4.5k oil change? my '99 td (BMW engine) is DEFINITELY 7,500, and I'm told they go much longer in the BMW chassis, with a warning to advise that oil change is due depending on condition. I suspect the shorter interval is for different engines. I like the sound of pumping out with the Pila, how much? £40?

Cheers

The official statement is that GM state that the water should be drained from the fuel filter and the oil and filter should be changed every 10,000Km......

And we would recommend more frequent oil changes than that because this engine suffers badly if the oil is not clean as the timing chains stretch, the piston cooling oil jets get blocked etc etc...

Amazing how GM can provide so many useful(?) different service options for the same engine. However, I am happy with the performance of my td with 7500miles (12096Km) oil change, it certainly hasn't caused me any problems, and the oil consumption is excellent. I always use 10w-40 semi-synthetic.

PM sent.

Basically, up til 1998, that engine was 7,500km oil changes, changed to 10,000km in 1998 for marketing purposes (nothing has changed to engine or the oils).  Remember, this is a MAXIMUM, and like the ridiculous 20,000 mile petrol oil changes, will do damage.

How many do you want it to do?

Now at 137k mls.
Previously 185k & 200k.
200k ran fine. 185k suffered from no hot start.
Ahhh smelling is everything ....  I saw that coming.

As many as it likes! Its worth nothing, maybe £2500, with a following wind, so I will probably run it to death, throw it away and get something else. I usually run my cars for up to 15 years, and having trained as an aircraft engineer I have little difficulty in maintenance. I have never had an engine failure (in a car- too many to count in a/c) so I think I am probably doing something right.

If you want to keep it, knock the oil changes down to 3k - costs about £17 if you get a TC card, and takes 20mins ;)
