Title: Heated Seats switch problem:

Hi all,

Have installed around 3 heated seat switches on drivers side and it seems to blow, all have been second hand switches so could be that - but 3 popping seems a bit too much of a coincidence.

Any idea's ?

dunno... sort of works once, can smell a little bit of an "electroniccy" burning and then if I turn off the car and then start up again and try the switch it fails to start the heated seat as if the switch has burnt out.

anybody else care to hazard a guess?

Fuse isn't blowing so that seems to rule out a power spike(for whatever reason) coming from the seat itself.

If you are competant with a multimeter it might be a good idea to put it inline with the passenger side and check current flow, then do the same on the drivers side. Its possible that the element in the seat has shorted out or more likely the seat rail has chewed the cable from the floor to the seat and is shorting to ground. take a damn good look over for that with your drivers seat all the way forward i suspect.

if it is shorting, it would show a much higher current flow for the drivers side.

Looking at the diagrams there appears to be a control unit for the seat- probably in or under the seat and the switch switches power to the control unit and there appears to be a signal indicating the temperature setting too.

Maybe the control unit has died, and is drawing too much currrent through the switch or through the signal line from the variable control in the switch?
