Title: To flush or not to flush
Post by: waspy on 10 January 2008, 21:53:10
Gona hopefuly change the oil this wkend on my 2.2DTi. Would it be a good idea to use a engine oil flush to get the crap out or am i likely to do more harm than good??? The engines done 81000 with FSH.
Anyone had experience & would care to share.
Thankyou in advance  :)

I use to use an engine flush on my 2.0dti Vectra every six months, never seemed to do it any harm.  :y

It's generally advised not to use engine flush solutions as they can create more trouble than they solve. The advise most of us would give is to do far more frequent oil changes than VX recommend.

Changing the oil regularly is the single most important thing that you can do to protect your engine.

If used regularly then should be ok but if this 81K engine has never been 'flushed' and has been serviced to VX intervals it could cause problems.

Engine flushing is bad (unless you've had CHG failure and you need to clean out the mayo sludge)... Personally I think Castrol oils are bad to because they contain far to much detergent.. I'd say just stick with vauxhall 10w40 semisynth and change every 5-10k miles.

Assuming you don't have issues, dont flush, just change to a kind oil change schedule (like every 3k)...

Ahhhm... 3-5k miles is more like it for petrol... in this case even less as this is a diesel.

i used to be a rover tech [yeah thats a while ago now] but they used to sell flush kits as service ad on but only if the car had under 40k on it.
i did flush a 820 that had done 77k and it knocked the small end bearings out so i would advise against it big time
as has been said change oil at 5/6k is a much better choice

do you mean old?
probably the best method is do a regular oil/filter change, run it a bit - say 500 miles and then do another oil change.  Repeat as you see fit depending on how the oil looks. (how black it gets).  At a tenner a change with parts on TC its a cheap and worthwhile job.
