I woulod say yes, but do the changes more frequently (3000k) in order to flush out the old stuff properly.
No point in going any higher spec that semi-synth

I agree with JayW above, though a normal oil change for a TD should be around 3k, so initially change every 1k...

ALL modern engine oil are compatible with each other, so no harm will befall you if you mix them (though obviously for maximum protection you want to have as much of the higher-quality oil as possible...) .
So if you are running on say full-synth Mobil-1, and you discover that due to cam cover seals leak you are short of 1L, you will be better-off with topping-up using any semi-synth 10W-40 you can find rather than drive on until you manage to get some 'proper' Mobile-1....
