of the reversing band going tits up in a auto box through water damage?
just had my auto box looked at buy a gearbox specialist and they say its broken up and laying in the sump.
now i need to find a new gearbox or a new car.
gutted the omega might be no more soon :'(
am running out of cash very quickly.

I see by your profile you're not afraid to get your hands dirty - so a replacement box will cost you about £75. No need to scrap the car ;)
Might even be able to give you a hand sometime :)

ok how hard is it and what do i need to look out for when looking for a new box?

4pots are harder to do than V6's much easier with a ramp...
Check the selector switch first.... passenger side of the gearbox, that could have been washed clean due to the floods and now be drying up and cracked connections....
Is it fine going forwards? - Whats the millage of the box?
-
also.. You say somethign was found in the sump. Sometimes a thrust washer breaks up in the oil pump and this ends up in the smaller front sump. I wonder if this is what has happened?
Either way it's gearbox out time, and, assuming the gearbox has been playing up for a while, it is probably not worth trying to fix it.
I would look for another box from a 4 cylinder Omega. One that's accident damaged or has suffered engine failure is a good bet as you know they didn't scrap it due to a knackered gearbox.

its ok going forwards although sometimes you can feel her going in and out of third. the box has done 106,000

I'd get the selector switch looked at / replaced.
Omega autoboxes very rarely fail.... they are the same box as used in Mercs...
-
it is selecting reverse but you have to do short sharp bursts of power to get her to roll backwards and even then its at a snails pace.
-
if you need a box try fleabay, they come up on there sometimes. i got one last year for 40 quid :y

cant find any on ebay....
hubby just got a quote £470 for a box with postage and 6mths grnty

I can certainly get you a box a lot cheaper than that...

Something nasty has been found in the sump - so it needs attention IMHO.

Between the two of you, you can replace gearbox ;)

Yes, you can.
You'll need a couple of good jacks/stands, etc.
I'm happy to help out, and have all the kit, if there's a good time :)

theres only one "band"in the box and if it had "failed"( ;D ;D)you would be going nowhere as its used in forward motion to
-
My guess is that it was the thrust washer in the sump, and 2 and 2 was put together when it wouldn't work in reverse.

and me being dumb today. the thrust washer does what and lives where?
-
There's a thrust washer in the auto box that sits between the fluid pump and the rest of the box, IIRC, to take up a clearance.
Originally, plastic washers were fitted and these have a habit of breaking up. It's common to find the remains of this washer in the sump of a failed gearbox.
There's an excellent explanation of it by sassanach here: http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1183142571
