Some mofo crashed into the passenger door of my omega tonight...having recently changed the central locking mechanism I have got a good understanding of what i might find behind the door card...a few questions :-
1. The car is classed as "silver" - if I get a replacement from a breakers, have there been many variations in silvers over the years?
and if so, what should i be specifying?
2. On a scale of 1-10 where 10 requires an entire weekend and specialist tools - how hard is it to change an entire door and is there any specialist tools required?
3. Are there any tutorials online? I couldnt find an entire door one here.
your help would be most appreciated!

Well there are at least 3 versions of star silver. Best to get the colour code off the VIN plate and try and match it that way.

i had my door off over the weekend to fix the check strap, id advise you to use a trolly jack and short lenght of wood to support the door before you remove it and you'll need help holding it cos its a heavy thing. remove the bolt for the door strap and disconnect the wiring connector, two door pins to remove (top one goes down and out, bottom one goes up and out). i used a small vice grip to slightly grip the pin and tapped the vice grip with a hammer to remove the pin.
door card doesnt have to come off.....................
20 minutes should do it
hope this helps

.... and once door is removed, do not switch on ignition as you will get an airbag fault that will then require to be cleared before the bags are operative again.

Can you not claim on his insurance policy? Or was it done when parked, etc...?

Possibly, but Ive spent a while building up my no claims and there is always the possibility that the insurance companies will rule in his favour...without wanting to give too much up on line..lets just say that whilst I wholeheartedly feel he is at fault, the insurance companies may not think that way....for the sake of 50 quid for a door and half a day's work..what the hell....

Ignition barrel is a peice of cake. Turn it to pos 1 and poke some wire in the little hole at the front, and it will pop out :)
Keep your old transponder, though!

cheers folks!

Here's some pics, let me know what you think...repairable or cheaper to replace the whole door...also, what colour is my car? ??

oh dear, was it a motorbike?
-
i hope not,the bikers probably in hospital if itwas.
-
yeah i know, just looks like an odd size/shape for a car if the car hit him in the side
-
Being an ex biker, no it definitely wasnt..it was a young chap in a bmw with gay lights underneath and tvs in the headrests...and a hangy off bumper, smashed light cluster and some silver (Z158???) paint down his wing :)

Hit me at a forty five degree angle...
I was pulling across two lanes of traffic and he was blatantly going too fast as he could have stopped in time if not.

Well, colour wise i would say try and get a door from a facelift vehicle (identified by the coloured rubbing strip), the colour will probably be star silver 3. Perhaps find one being broken currently on ebay and ask the seller to remove, (it's probably worth a bit of extra cash!) or even, if you have to collect and you find a nice supplier, perhaps you could do the job together, many hands an all that. Again, it's worth an ask!
Job wise, on your own, perhaps 1-2 hours if you're taking it steady. The hardest bit will be removing the old door, yes they are HEAVY, trolley jack required for ease. The door pins are also a pita, tools are available for a few quid to make this easier.

Just to update you ... with some investigative work from "alexandjen" cheers!
We have deduced that Z158 is actually oyster and the z refers to :-
Y
=
applies to single-coat painting
Z
=
applies to two-coat painting (as 2 coats of a plain colour; 2 coats metallic and 2 coats pearlescent)
Z+Z
=
applies to two-colour painting. The main colour of the car and the secondary colour appear next to each other

Nope..Not repairable..The only way to correct this door is "çektirme" in my language (dont know in english) that they use welding and try pulling outside..But after will need many layers of filling material and will never be a perfect surface..And the filling material will after crack..Dont loose time and change with a second hand, same color one..

Give these chaps a buzz. I've been using them for over 10 years and they are quite good. I've had x2 Z148 doors from them for £50 each and fitted them to replace a couple of scabby old ones. Easier than messing about trying to repair! Whats the point, it'd cost at least £80 to paint a door and that's without blowing it into the rest of the car.
