Title: erratic shifting on auto box
Post by: petec on 31 January 2008, 22:00:42
I have an intermittent gearbox problem on my 2003 2.6 cdx auto. majority of the time it behaves fine, driving gently it changes up at about 2.5k rpm, nice and smooth but maybe every other day it 'hangs on' in the gears and doesn't change up until about 3.5k rpm, this seem most noticeable in second.
Even if you are hardly accelerating the box will still stay in second until 3.5k then changes. It might do this for a couple of changes or maybe 10 minutes then its ok again.

Anyone got any ideas, the intermittent nature suggests it may be a dodgy connection on a sensor but there are no warning lights, perrformance is fine. Mileage is 70k with a full dealer service history from the garage who supplied it so I think it has been serviced correctly.

Would a tech2 be able to monitor whats happening?  :-/

has the gearbox oil been changed?

Recommended that it is done at 60K, I'm not sure that it would give the symptoms you are describing though

I would also check the oil level, whilst it is due to be changed at 60K some dealers won't do it unless asked by the customer

mine used to do things like this before i had the software upgrade, i noticed it more when i was pulling a hill in slow traffic, i don't know if it is a characteristic of the box.

is it just when cold?

Think the oil was changed at 60k, its on the checklist as done anyway.

The problem doesn't happen when cold, I know the auto's always initially  change at higher revs when cold  but it's not that.
maybe after 5 or 10 miles, round town it might start playing up.

Just up the A46 from you is a nice chap with a Tech2 who may be able to see if there is anything the ECU is detecting. See http://theboy@omegaowners.com

good thought!

was thinking of getting the gearbox and climate control upgrade done so this may be a good time for a vist although if the problem is only occasional there may be nothing to detect if it's working ok at the time.

I was thinking of getting one of the cheapo ebay tech2's, to add to my toolkit, this may be a little off topic but some of them say they can be used to monitor live data etc, obviously the real thing costs way more and presumably has more functionality but for instance can the cheap ones interface with the vauxhall TIS2000  software and can they upgrade software and reset things like airbag lights etc.

the only software available for cheapo t2 is the hungarian.  iirc, this cant do live data at all.  also, by default, it cant do autoboxes, though Marks_DTM has put in a lot of effort to improve coverage.  Cheapo t2 can't talk to tis, so no ecu updates, reconfigs, programming, or security updates.

If you've used VAG-COM (the VAG compatible low lost laptop diagnostics), cheapo t2 hungarian software not in same league.  Whereas VAG-COM (although could be massively improved to make easier to use) is a nice, polished, reliable product, Hungarian t2 software is not even beta quality.

But, if you have a compatible laptop (ie real com port), worth getting imho.

Go for the ELM 327, I bought one of these and there is free software around that works well with it , check out www.talktomycar.co.uk

My 2003 2.6 behaves much the same, after climbing gentle slopes it can hold on to a lower gear for longer than expected.

It's now around 130000 and has had a fluid flush.

I think firmware update is the next move.

No good in this case, as can only talk to engine ECU, not gearbox ECU.
