Title: Another Autobox thread

I have a problem with the autobox on my miggy and I thought I’d dip into the great pool of knowledge that is OOF.
I’ve not her long so don’t know how long this has been happening for but.
after a while I lose momentum I get High revs like its in neutral and the suddenly the box remembers what its doing and puts it back in gear with a thump, check automatic gearbox then comes up and its limp home time, however if I back off as it starts to rev high and change down a gear manually I can stop it coming up with a fault.

I haven’t yet checked the ATF level because I haven’t got a replacement washer for the level plug yet and its cold out.

I suspect it might be the selector switch, but am open to hear you views.

Sounds like classic thrust washer failure to me......bet if you drop the front sump off the box you will find the remnants of a washer.

If the LEDs by stick light up appropriately, then not selector switch.

First port of call would always be change ATF, but as suggested above, I suspect bits of thrust washer will be there.

Easy enough to replace thrust washer once box is off.

got to agree with Mark on this - similar thing happened to my box while on the way to the south of france a couple of years ago, wouldn't change down lots of clunks etc.
took the sump off to change the filter and found (what i now know to be) what was left of the thrust washer :o
ended getting a second hand box fitted for £500 :'(

guess from what the guys are saying you can sort the thrust washer prob??? :o

And whats my time scale is it likely to wall apart at any moment or can I keep driving on it until it gets fixed?

I wouldn't drive until fixed, unless you are going to change box anyway.

To change thrust washer, from memory, its:
Box off car
Remove TC and bellhousing (with oil pump)
Fit thrust washer
Refit

With the right equipment, probably around 3hrs?
