Well I eventually got round to checking it out following last weeks trip home on the recovery wagon.
Found rear plug lead knckered (not gripping), faulty fan switch and air in the system.
Flushed system and fitted new fan switch, replaced leads with new and fired up, still passing condensation but running smooth. As soon as it got presure found big crack in top of rad above top hose, plastic welded joint good enough to test system and found that system would only heat up when about 3-4000 revs on engine. Stood waching air come out of system when loud crunching noises started coming from behind cam cover.
Yep you guessed it, the water pump has give up the ghost, but luckily stopped engine before it went altogether and f----d the engine completly.
Going to get new waterpump, radiator, thermostat (do you have to buy the complete housing or is the thermostat available on its own??), and timing kit asap and will update accordingly.
Been offered a pug 406 1.9d as a temp, until shes back on the road :-[

It would be sensible to replace the cambelt, tensioner and pulleys at the same time.

not sure about 2 pot stat - someone will say soon I'm sure.
The rest is very easy and quick on the 4 pot :y

On the 2.2 you have to buy the full thermostat housing. Sorry, I don't know if this is the same for the 2.0. :-?

Yep, for 2.0 Vx told me whole housing reqd, £50-odd retail.
Found one in Halfords for half that, including new o-ring seal and a little sachet of sealing grease.
You pays your money and takes your chance...
Mine working fine. :)

Well Im not bothered about buying gen vx parts on this occasion as have decided as soon as shes running that shes going up for sale. Had too many problems since it was fized by the butcher of yorkshire.
Dont worry though will be looking to upgrade to a 2.5 or 3.0 very soon just as soon as Ive done enough jobs to pay for a lot newer version.
In the mean time it looks like Im going to be driving a pug diesel 406 for a few months :o :( :-[ :-/ :'(
