Thanks to everyone re my gearbox issue, new selector switch has resolved my issue.
But now have a strange issue where if I go somewhere and turn the engine off for a short time, it wont start again! leave it for about 20mins and it starts...... Breakdown people thought it was an immobilser. But I dont have one i thought. Alarm at least was torn out by the police, (x police car not a raid on my car!)
Did it again the other day at blockbusters. Wouldnt start, would kick into life. left it and then started no bother. wierd....

Sounds like possibly a failing crank sensor to me. Read the fault codes from the engine ECU and see what you've got.

Just a thought, when you say it won't start, it is turning over on the starter motor, but just not firing, correct?
.. or is it failing to turn over completely?
kevin

i.e. cranking or just clicking?
-
its turning over just not firing
-
Do a paperclip test. Or bring it up to brackley for a chat with the tech2

Embarrassingly, my spare is on the kitchen worktop, not in the car...

may sound weird but my backup sensors are in the bedroom ;D :y

spare sensor? I only just heard that it existed. How much these things cost then? roughly?
Might take up on that offer 'TheBoy'

Mine was roughly 40 quid on trade club. Might find them slightly cheaper on ebay but make sure you identify which one your car needs as there are a couple of varieties.
However, get the codes read first. It just may be something else.

As per PM, happy to tech2 it, but a paperclip is cheaper if you want to try yourself ;)
If you have a 19 stored, get a new cranksensor. Plastic type (likely for yours) about £40 + VAT, metal type about £20 more

ok, may need to paperclip if i cant find out how. Its now started to breakdown whislt driving. Stopped yesterday in middle of dual carriageway. A v6 is a heavy car to push!!
Still think its crank sensor if I breakdown whilst driving?

this look like the one? :question
-
It could be.
The shape of the electrical connector is the key.....so check the one on your car first if you can.

my 2.2 was doing the same thing so i got a new cam sensor now the car is going great thanks to the oof :y some times it would not go over 4500 rpm other times it would and cut out will driving to :y

I broke down during a postal strike and tried to claim off them as if they hadn't been so lazy I would had my crank sensor a couple of days earlier.
(Bought off Ebay but special delivery failed)
-
Ok, so I have the paperclip test details and the post about crank sensor. Can I just check the plug that I need to check whether its oval or square is under the panel I need to remove by the window wipers?

yup.
Plug a bloody paperclip in!

I should add, mine went at about 90mph on some European road.... ...generally, leaving to cool for 30mins or so allows you to continue until it warms up again.
But a paperclip will prove it ;)
-
If you're really unsure about the paperclip test, I'm on oxford later this afternoon, I'll swing by and read the codes out for you... :)
Shame we don't have a crank sensor, wouldn't take me ten mins to pop it on if so. PM me if you want a hand..
:)

Hi, thanks for the offers people. May need help if indeed sensor needs changing. Done the paperclip and it seems to be coming up with number 9.
ie it flashes once, then twice, then nine times.
Whats that then?

Should flash 12 (1 flash, short pause, 2 flash) 3 times, before moving on. Sure you are not getting a 19 in there as well?
-
no its definately 9. been in the car for ages counting the flashing. yes it does the 1,2 thing a few times then does 9 times.

i thought i was going to get 1 or 2 flashes then 19 to indicate the issue but i guess you add them together. So assuming that then its looks like it could be 19. ie 9 + 1 + 9..... but im guessing... [smiley=embarassed.gif]
-
but to be honest, it quite tricky to write it down and count it all the same time.... :o
-
19 is crank sensor.......but then we have been saying that for quite a while now :y
-
yes m8, so i will do as you guys said and re the guides etc, sorry for sounding dim, as i said thought it would just flash nineteen times not like morse code....
:y

Lol.....imagine what it would be like for an immobiliser fault......144 flashes!
-
Yup, crank sensor as suspected :y
In Maintenence Guides is a guide on replacing, and a new route for cable.
-
crank sensor replaced, and fingers crossed its still all working. Im afraid I chickened out and got my garage to do it though when I saw when the sensor was located right at the back of engine. also max'd my credit card to lower the car at same time! but dont tell m'wife... ;)
broke down on way to garage though.... ended up having to be towed to the garage. :-[
