Title: Removing Ash Tray ?

Hi All,
 I need to remove Climate Control facia panel to get to a duff lamp.

Although a later model than illustated in Haynes Manual I have tried their instructions. This is wood effect front.

However, I can't even fathom out how to remove the ashtray to even get to the lower screws, and to be honest I can't feel the bar through the radio aperture you are supposed to pull down to release the top.

Is the later model different ? or what trick am I missing ?
