Title: Does anyone know
Post by: haj on 10 February 2008, 20:17:20
if there is a pump or some moving part under the front nearside wing?
I have a weird noise that seems to be coming from this general area.
The noise does not change pitch on revving engine, dissapears after a couple of mins.
Just asking this so i do not take the liner out and find zilch.
Can't be more specific about the noise

Sounds like the secondary air injection pump which runs during warmup only. If it gets noisy it can be disconnected without causing any problems.

I quite like the noise!!!
I keep getting people asking me what it is and i tell them its a supercharger (muppets actually beleve it) makes for a few shocked looks..

Could do with disconecting it though  is the plug easy to get to or is it a inner arch off job..

Superb!  my 2.5 developed this noise more than 12 months ago but I avoided asking about it as I didn't need the bill.  (just waited for something to fall off!).

If it can be disconnected  with no ill effects, what does it actually do?

AFAIK:- (please let me know if i'm wrong!!)

It injects cold air into the exhaust manifold so as to heat up the cats quicker.  If you rev the car slightly when cold you may hear a popping noise... that'll be the injected air combusting with any unburnt fuel in the downpip(s).

My old 2.0 GLS (W plate) had this problem too so i unclipped the connector to the pump and the noise went away.  I didn't trip the EML so i was happy to leave it.

no too sure if my 2.6 has one.
