Will clear after twenty or so fault free starts. Otherwise can be done with a code reader.

If the EML is still on, you still have a fault somewhere.  :(

won't it clear if you disconnect the battery for half hour?
that used to clear my codes on my old astra ecotec.

The stored fault code will clear itself after a number of 'clean' starts. If the EML is on the engine is still recieving a fault from somewhere.

Don't we need to know what car he drives?  Depending on engine, fault codes are different and they are cleared in different ways?

But if the EML is, no matter what car it is, there is a fault that requires its cause to be rectified. Or are we being confused by face lift car's emmisions lamp?

Agreed but we don't even know if it's a facelift.  :-?

You can start it a hundred & 20 times but if there is a fault that the EML doesn't like the EML will stay on. 20 clean starts will clear any faults that might have been stored in the ECU when the fault was lighting the EML.

As Andy B says, EML on = ECU STILL not happy.  As soon as fault fixed, EML will go out (and will disappear from paperclip test immediately/after number of clean starts (depending on code))
