A small brass brush is best (dont use steel as it will get in the poores of the alloy and rust)

if you mean the plastic cover then good old wd40 brngs it back to its proper colour a treat!!!just spray a liberal dose on leave for a few mins then wipe off and voila looking as good an new, if you mean the ally rocker cover or cam cover then as good as anything else is tfr (traffic film remover) just work it in with a brush then hose off, gets rid of all the oilstains and brings the ally up

I thought something along the lines of paraffin would be good for cleaning the engine bay. Water is no good with the amount of electronics the engine uses these days.

Or even better a mixture of paraffin and oil. Paraffin to clean off the dirt and oil to protect against any oxidation or rust. I've used gunk engine degreaser on another car and it just oxidised the aluminium metal. Never left it on too long either.  :-/
