Title: Noisy engine!
Post by: Kate on 17 February 2008, 19:11:32
Hi. Does anyone know what would cause a petrol 2.5 V6 engine to sound noisy?  It sounds a bit tappy all the time.  It's been running cold, could that affect it?

Thanks a lot. :y

I presume you have checked the oil level?
if its alright when was the oil last changed?

Oil level is fine. Just changed two weeks ago.

Thanks. :y

what grade and viscosity oil did you use?

how cold is it running? it should be about half way on the gauge.

if it is running really cold as in just off the bottom then i'd have thought the oil isn't getting up to temp and not lubricrating properly.

just an idea :-/

Thanks. A garage did the oil and filter change but I think they were a bit useless as now it seems to be leaking oil from the filter.

It's running really cold. The needle doesn't move at all most of the time

knackered thermostat i reckon, stuck open.

does the temp rise if it's sat idling for a while?

oh and it'll be using a bit more fuel aswell if it's running cold.

I'm almost bankrupt putting petrol in.  You can watch the needle going down as you drive. :-X

The needle only moves if you let it idle for ages.

THermostat deffo do that first before anything as it can cause lots of little problems (nothing major) and cost alot in fuel ;) :y

If the themostat is buggered then you going to be running very rich!!! as if the choke is always out, so you will be getting appauling mpg.

Get the themostat checked

Be carefull about tightening your filter. Is it a spin off cartridge type or an ally housing with a filter inside? If it's the latter, they only need 15Nm, which is not much more than hand tight. Check the 'O' ring is still intact & in its groove. There are a few here who've had trouble removing the filter housing after some garage ape has swung off the thing to tighten it back up.

Not sure which type I've got.  How would I get access to it as it's a bit awkward on a V6?  :-*

If you lift the bonnet it at the top right hand side of the engine. I access mine from under the car (on ramps) when it's filter change time.

Would a mig not crush ramps? ;D

An Omega isn't the B al & end all of cars. ;) There are far heavier cars about. You just need to be carefull driving forward up them as the lower edge of the front valence will tend to hit the ramps before the front wheels hit the ramps.

Hi Kate,
Don't give any work to a garage which can't re-fit a filter properly. Better to get a second opinion about their work and if defective, go for the throat. I know it's a pain, but unless you feel confident to do the job yourself, it's probably the best course to take.
It's really beginning to look as if the cost of a trip to Shifnal on Saturday would be your cheapest option.
Bill.

I have had mine on ramps many times with no problems, but place a piece of wooden board about 1 inch thick before the ramps, this stops the front catching.

Yes, you would get an oil change at cost and the stat at cost to.....the result would be cheaper running coz you would get more mpg and the fuel used would be much less than the labour charges to do the job localy.

Is shifnal the cambelt party?  Would someone be able to fix it for me?

That would be great and very kind! :y

Yes, shifnel, telford.

If you can get it there, I will do the stat for you and check the oil leak.

Yes it is. See the various posts in 'Gen. Chat' & in 'Meetings' sections. The whole point of it is to help one another to do jobs using the expertise available (and to have some fun doing it), and whilst the schedule for major jobs is full I have no doubt some of us will find the time to start sorting out your difficulties.
Mark - would Kate have to buy her oil, filter, etc. to bring with her or will there be a supply source at the meet. Not been to one before.

Nothing. We hold them every now and then as a social get together and to help each other out with the more challenging aspects of Omega maintenance. :y

EDIT: Then again, you could try to pay us with homemade wine...Hic [smiley=beer.gif]
