Title: Thermostat Job!
Post by: Kate on 17 February 2008, 13:26:41
Hi. Can anyone tell me how long it takes to replace the thermostat on a 2.5 V6?

I'm trying to get quotes so it will help if I know.

Thanks a lot. :y

I reckon half a day if it goes well, garage times may be less.

Yes, two hours.

The official Gm figure is 2.1 hours.

Post by: The Cambelt Kid on 17 February 2008, 17:56:02
Well looks like i'm about to loose 2.1 hours very soon then.  The temp meter takes about 10 miles to lift off the bottom and only realy lifts to 85 or so deg's when sat in traffic, so i assume that i need to replace the thermostat.

I'd be interested to know how much a garage would cost for such a job though...

Cheers

Thanks for all your help. :y

A garage told me it would take 4 hours and cost £125.

Well main dealer at 2.1 hours plus bleed r/t would be £185+v.a.t :o

Is there a 'how to guide' for the stat replacement  :question

Post by: Darth Loo-knee on 17 February 2008, 23:30:21
Not sure you need to have a look mate, on a V6 you need to remove the Plenum, and inlet manifold. Then apparently the thermostat can be a little fiddley :y

5 litres, but if your dealer is as good as mine, you'll have to order it it in, as they only stock it in 1 litre bottles.  :-?

I will bring some with me anyway....

Fortunately at this meet we have plenty of capable people to help although, given some of the feedback on your stat so far, I plan to do this job myself.

As for time, when ever is convenient, there will be members turning up from 8.30ish onwards and you have quite a distance to travel...

Why don't you turn up at 4.30 and make Mark prove to us all that he can do jobs as quickly as he keeps telling us he can.  ;D  ;D
Seriously, best to arrive AM so that there are no snags timewise. I'm sure that, like me, you'll find the whole day interesting, and fun, but if you need to, you can leave when you wish if your jobs have been done.

Don't take that too much to heart, Kate.  ;)  Much of the Haynes manual is of limited value to the experts, but I find it very good as a  guide to how to go about most things. And as in every walk of life, once you've done it once, the next time is much easier.
It could be better, but it has its uses, eg. an excellent source of torque values.
Bill.

It can be useful for finding torque values....

Its at its most useful when you find you need to be 1 inch taller... ;D

I agree although in the case of the thermostat it does make it sound like a 5 minute job.

.. and in the case of the V6 cam belt it omits to mention that you have to get the cam timing correct.

I must read it again for comedy value but I'm pretty sure that it only gives it a cursory mention before stating the standard disclaimer that you should take it to VX to have the tension checked afterwards (and by the time they've charged through the nose to strip it down to see the belt you may as well have got them to change it). The laughable thing is the tension's the easy bit to get right on a V6.

They really just cut and paste information from a generic "haynes manual" these days rather then working out the tricky bits on each model, which makes them useless to someone who knows the basics, and dangerous to someone who doesn't IMHO.

Whenever I try to use Haynes to do work on my car, I realise I don't know what anything means.  ;D

The only thing I can do is change the air filter.  I can also change spark plugs but not on a V6.  I think you have to take the engine out on the V6 to change spark plugs! ;D
