Hi Guys (and girls), an old chap who lives a few doors up is having a few problems with his Mig, its a 2002 2.2 CD auto salloon.
Problems;
Poor starting (takes ages to fire up)
When it does finally start it has no power (if you touch the throttle to early it stalls)
When it does run it still has no power (seems to be on limp home mode) he cant go near any hills.
Things the so called expert has done (local garage with a tech 2) and charged him a lot of money for;
new exhaust cat.
spark plugs
cam-shaft sensor
replaced the throttle housing.
seems every time he gets something repaired the tech 2 shows up some more faults.
He's spent about 400 pounds so far
P.S. the EML light is on all the time
Any ideas ???

crank sensor on its way out?
-
Where abouts in Leicester is this car?
-
Has this problem started before Garage did thier bit, ie was this there fix, or has it started after being fixed (!)?.
Also what about the EML light before or after a visit to the Garage.
You can do a paper clip test, but I and i'm sure a few others on here would want to know more about the Garage thingy first.
Tell's what you can. (your sure to get lots help on here).
I really hope this is not a case of someone taking advantage of OAP money. Hopefully I'm wrong.
Chris.

The fuel filter should have been changed as an early step, surely. May be restricted.

Its a 2.2 so the paper clip wont work....
The symptoms sudgest a possible MAF fault but, using tech 2 and monitoring the live data should be able to confirm or disclude this.
I would also be checking for vac leaks etc.
Which garage has been doing the work?
-
One quick test.....if he very slowly presses the throttle, does it build the revs up?
-
Lots of questions. i'll try to go through as many answers as pos, cant speak to the chap at the mo (on shift later)
if you very slowly press the (go pedal) The revs will build up. he said you canget about 60 miles an hour eventually
The garage he uses is a local man with a sort of lock up on a small industrial estate not to far from me .He's used him for years. Think he's an ex Vaux mechanic so he should be ok. He bought his own tech 2 (the proper one).
Been thinking along the lines of the MAF sensor my self, but would'nt that show up as a fault.
I'll try to get more info so i can talk to some of you guys and maybe give him a ring while i'm there so you could talk to him.
I would bring it along to the cambelt meeting on the 23rd but i'm bringing my own car for a new belt.
I'm in The Oadby part of leicester
Think the EML light was on when he took it in the first time, i'll speak to him in a bit before i go to work,

Oadby is not to bad for me, grew up in Market Harborough and have family there......might be able to call by and run some (thorough) tests.

Going to try and get his son to come along on saturday with it but he is in coventry at the mo (with the car).
Told Gary (the person that owns the car) not to pay anymore cash out until he's told what the problem is and how much its going to cost and to get some sort of guarantee with the repair.
Dont like to see people being ripped off.

What does that test prove or disprove (for my own curiosity)

The symptoms sudgest that the engine is possibly not able to react to the change in throttle, this could be due to a number of things....
If you press the pedal slowly then the lambdas can provide a level of mixture control (they are slow to respond) even if the MAF is not detecting the change in air flow.....
I would be looking to read some live data of MAF, throttle position, injector duration etc with Tech2 to allow better analysis of the fault (e.g. if fuel pressure is low you would expect the injector pulse duration to max out out at speed under lambda control and a lambda fault to be set)

TPS??
