Title: Big favour please - read my CV!
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 11 October 2007, 19:11:15
Hi Guys,

I'm looking for volunteers to have a read of my (draft) CV, preferably tonight. I seem to be struggling with it, and could use some feedback on ideas for improvement.

I am desperately looking for a new job, it's time to move on - I feel like I'm in a bit of a rut (even though I'm probably not).

Any volunteers?   :)

You need to taylor the CV to the job you are after  :-X

Its been about 3yrs since I was last involved in recruiting, so may be out of touch...

I appreciate that... but I always have a "general" CV that I can modify as appropriate depending on what I'm applying for... :)

Yes, I know a little about computer thingies.  Very funny reading some CVs - in fact we used to sometimes invite them for interview even though we could tell they were rubbish, just to tear them to shreds ;D.  Harsh but fair....

One guy, alledgedly MCSE (Microsoft's certification) and CCNA (Cisco's networking qualification), couldn't even tell me how to fault find basic IP problems...

In fact, we only had one really, really good guy - he managed to answer the majority of my techie Qs, so employeed him on the spot :y

I've got my head half way through a CCNA book..

Don't even want to think about CCNP!

What sort of IP questions did you ask him?

I suspect he was a textbook learner, rather than hands on - I am the opposite..

I suspect he didn't have them.

The question started:
The server's default gateway is actually a firewall which drops ICMP packets. How can you prove that packets are getting from the server to the firewall if you do not have access to the firewall?

but as he was confused about ICMP and firewalls, it changed to:
How can you tell if your packets are getting to the default gateway?

Didn't bother with the proper techie Q's ;D

I currently build and maintain internet infrastructure servers (RADIUS, DNS, SMTP, News - all probably the biggest in the UK), VoIP servers, monitoring servers etc.

Your own business or employed?

ALso would you say an MCSE is a good qualification to have? , I went on a pay website for MCSE and the pay fluctuates like mad from £32-£68k

Don't talk to me about Radius Servers...  :'(

The ISP industry is definately a fast paced one...

MCSE has become a standing joke, due to pretty much being able to 'buy one'

MCSE does have its use in getting through the paper shift stage of jobs, but certainly won't get you big bucks on its own.

Someone with MCSE but little experience can expect Helpdesk type work, and corresponding low pay (20k)

Someone with MCSE but lots of experience (which buy nature usually includes lots of other qualifications) can get good money.  As can someone with no qualifications but lots of experience.

There are lots of people who claim to have the experience, but I'm sure I'm not the only recruiter who can spot the bullshitters a mile off...
