Can someone please tell me what alternator I have in my 1996 2.5 omega gls?
Is it 100 or 120 amp?
And is there any difference with the vectra ones, are they interchangable with the omega?
Part numbers would be very helpful
I have a noisy bearing but have been told to replace the whole unit as the extra heat from the damaged bearing will destroy the unit. Is this true, if so how much should a new one cost?
I would be grateful for any help!

I dont think it will be damaged..I got mine serviced..
Although reaching to it is little hard..Once out its an half an hour job
for an expert ..

I don't have a 2.5 so I can't answer your first question, but really don't think it will make too much difference 100 or 120 Amp any way.
If the Vectra unit is physically the same size, connections, and pulley distance on shaft then you could use it.
If your present unit is still charging OK just noisy, then just replace the bearings, ther'e as cheap as chips. The bearing would have to be really clapped out and collapsed and rotor touching the stator to cause any appreciable heating.
If it was me, because of the hassle getting it out, I would also replace the brushes / regulator unit at the same time.
If you can't do it yourself, Lucas run an exchange rebuilt unit scheme, no matter what make it is.

Agreed..finishing it in one time is necessary because taking out is not so easy..And service items are cheap..

It will be a 120amp...I believe all the v6 ones are, certainly pre facelift...I have an alternator from a 95 3.0 v6 elite if you need one...think the 100amp ones are just for the 2.0???

Not a clue...I have always replaced any parts that failed, its a lot easier!

Bearings are easy to replace - rear one is smaller than the front. Front bearing is slightly more difficult as you have to get the inner off the shaft.
Just make a note of the number on each and have a look on ebay. Last ones I bought were only about a quid each.

Hi,
Just look in Yellow Pages under bearing supplies. Most towns have some bearing company.
For regulator / brushes unit look for auto electrical supplies.
There are online suppliers as well as ebay.
Bearing sizes are: 1 off 6203 2RS
1 off 6303 2RS
The 2 RS bit only means they are sealed both sides. It may be ZZ or 2Z or anything similar. The 4 digits ar the size.
