Title: 2.5 CDX Auto - Slipping into neutral
Post by: spaceraceuk on 07 January 2008, 19:43:18
Hi, not sure if anyone has experienced this before?

I recently bought an Omega 2.5 V6 CDX. Twice in the last 3 days while driving normally around town the engine revs have suddenly shot up and drive to the car has gone as if the gear selector has been knocked into neutral, but it hasn't. If I move into 3 and then back to D everything is fine again, but it's a little worrying.

Is this something anyone has seen before? Whats the best approach to take to investigate?

Thanks

Having read the FAQ or Tech section here (can't remember which now) that's what I'm leaning to as the first thing to try. There wasn't much service history with it so I'm now embarking on service/cambelt change etc. but this has jumped up the priority list!

No error codes no. And no lights or warnings appear when it jumps into neutral either (obviously the car doesn't think it has!).

Thanks for the advice

shame its not as easy as the Senators for checking oil!

Check the oil level (with the engine running) and after being though all the gears in turn.

Also check the selector switch is clean.

Does the selector switch light up properly when it fails. If not, change switch.  If that is OK, don't drive until you have as a minimum replaced the fluid, else you'll knacker it quickly

I'm not sure what/where the selector switch is?

If by light up you mean the lights next to 1,2,3,D etc. then yes that all works as normal. When it appears to jump to neutral (engine free revving high) the light is still lit next to D. Moving to 3, resuming drive power and then moving back to D again has the lights move correctly to 3 and back to D.

Will get the oil level checked and book it for a transmission fluid change. I rang a few places locally today and it's surprising how many won't touch an auto transmission fluid change.

Should cost about £150 for a oil and filter change.
Try and find an autobox specialist if poss, as they should know what they are doing.

Its quite an easy, if messy, job, and will cost iro of £60 - £80 for parts if you DIY

There is a possibility that the thrust washer has failed, that is a gearbox off job :(

Hello mate,

The problem happened to me just after i bought my elite!! Unfornatuly, it was the thrust washer that had decintgrated along with half of my drive train!! My elite only had 69k on the clock when it happened!

There are 2 ways of going....Gearbox rebuild depending on how much damage is done....Although not cheap £1400 for all new internals in mine, its guarenteed for a year. When the washer went, effectivly the drive train was running up and down the box smashing itself to buggery!

The second option is a second hand box for however and take your chance!

Hopefully yours is nowhere near as bad as mine was!!

Good luck

a bit more info...

1. i've discovered it *only* does it when changing from 2nd to 3rd around 25-30mph
2. it is more likely to do it when under load, e.g. driving up a hill. when driving down a hill or on the flat it usually changes how you would expect, silky smooth.
3. i've got it booked in now with an auto box specialist. they will do a fluid change and see the condition, but say it's probably a 'solenoid'???

The fact its now 3 weeks later, if you have been using it, and it was a minor issue (low atf, sticky solenoid), you have probablt waved goodbye to that box.

Autobox issues need to be resolved straight away, as cost to repair normally increases drastically the longer its left.

it's been off the road for 2 weeks while it had cambelt, water pump, thermostat and a few other things done. i've been pretty gentle with it when I have had to drive it but I take your point.

just as a follow up to this the problem has now been sorted. the auto gearbox specialists disgnosed a faulty solenoid that handles the change between 2nd and 3rd and replaced it. along with a fluid and filter change the car now drives perfectly - very happy!

whole job wasn't cheap as they also had to replace a front valve body casing as a small part of the original one was found to have broken off  :(

oil, filter, f+r gaskets came to about £95 - can't tell labour as it was just one figure for everything.
