Title: Water leak only when cold
Post by: seasider on 24 February 2008, 21:21:45
I have recently changed my 2.0 16 valve engine and althought the donor engine seems great I have a water leak which only starts a couple of hours after parking the car. It comes from the rear of the engine and very difficult to trace where from. My friend did the engine swap and it would be useful to offer any advice members have.

Suspect gasket, where exactly at the rear of the engine???/
Try and pin point it a little more.
I have known headgaskets to do this sort of thing, but i hope its not.

Any idea which side of the engine?  Rear O/S, N/S or center?

Beat me to it, Dazzler!  ;D

Does the water have anti-freeze in it ? if not could it be the air con ?

Could it be a slow seep from a blocked scuttler drain ??

If definately from the engine, wiping down with coloured paper towel (kimwipe is good) can help trace leaks as the towel changes colour when wet.

So wipe down fully to dry all surfaces, leave to stand for an hour, then "pat" around with dry papertowel to try and find the wet bits.....

Is it leaking constantly when its cold, or just for a while?  Would be good to confirm if it is coolant (should be coloured pink/blue and a sweet smell) or water.

My instinct is HBV although the symptoms are unusual.
