Title: wiring in a skybox

one for the leccy minded people here:

I moved into my new flat share, the guy already has Sky. For a tenner extra per month we get an extra box.

Now the extra box is £49 plus £25 install fee, my flat mate has a spare box. We requested just the new card, and we will install the box ourselves.

Now its a big set of flats, and has one main dish on the roof. He has a spare coxial connector in his bedroom, we are going to run an ariel connection to my room.

Now i have a load of standard coxial cable, left by some people who did our house ages ago. Question is:

1) can i use standard coxial cable to run to Sky box?

2) if so, do you need any proffesional tools to put on the connectors for the cable?

Can i just go down to Maplins, buy the coxial connectors and put them on the cable?

The cable needs to be low loss satellite coax, ideally. Strip one and and see if the outer conductor is just braid or braid with a copper foil underneath it. if it's the latter it'll do the job.

Connectors (F type) are pretty nasty. The inner of the coax becomes the centre pin and the body of the connector just screws onto the outer of the cable, with the braid underneath it, so no special tools required.

Not sure how it works with a community system but normally for multiple boxes you need multiple channels on the LNB which is the antenna on the front of the dish as the box sends a signal up to the LNB to change the frequency. I guess this will all be taken care of by the distribution system.
