Title: "Hot" smell from front nearside?
Post by: GastronomicKleptomaniac on 06 March 2008, 15:02:05
 How do

After a run out, my mum reckoned there was a "hot" smell coming from the nearside front of the car - I can't identify it further, my sense of smell is abysmal.
There's no leaks onto the floor, so any ideas chaps?

Cam-cover gasket beginning leak perhaps?
Oil would drip from there onto the heat-shield and 'cook-off'.
......breathers may need a clean-out as crankcase pressure can force oil out of the cam-cover gaskets.

I'd have thought if it was oil you'd smell something nasty rather than just hot.

Easy way to check - pull a plug lead on either side, and check the edges of the camcovers...

Right. Had a nosey, looked at the amount of plastic toss that's got to come off to get in to the plugs, thought "stuff that for a game of toy soldiers"... stuck my head down the back, there's traces of oil over the exhaust heatshield and surrounding area on the nearside bank, and a much smaller amount on the offside bank.
Is this what you'd expect if it was the CC gaskets?

Further interrogation of the aforementioned mother suggests that you can feel the heat from the nearside, as well as the "hot smell"...?

if you have nimble hands, you can pull amd manouver out the 2 or 4 lead without removing any plastic toss ;)

Yes, that sounds just like my car`s cam-gasket situation; not 'drippy' amounts of oil (more near-side than off), but general wiffy 'oilyness' after a long run.....the smellyness of such a small leak is compounded by the fact that the air intake for the ventilation is just aft/above of source of the smell.  :'(

*looks at hands roughly the size of dinner plates*

I'm out of practice on the old engine fiddling, don't want to risk breaking something vital, so it'll wait til I see my friendly local mechanic tomorrow. Definitely an oil leak from the top of the engine, though I'm not sure why that would make it feel like a radiator... cheers James and Debs. :y

Remember that the 2.6 uses an ignition module...

Whilst it looks as if you do have an oil leak, do remember that engines do get very hot under normal running conditions, so that's not abnormal unless it shows as an excessively high reading on your temp. guage.
