This info is for my other project! (I have too many of these!)
What are the varities of manual 'box and what kind of power/abuse can they take?
Im hoping to fit a saab turbo lump in my 200sx with an omega box (and thus combining my 3 favourite cars! ;D )

Two types.....R25 and R28......250Nm and 280Nm.....pretty strong old boxes.
The ultimate manual boxes based on availabilty are the Supra W series (not the crap Getrag 6 speed turbo ones).

I thought the W supra series were a bit weak sauce and the R154 is the one to have? Although I was looking for an easy(ish) mount, that would be a bit of a mare to fit to the saab lump :-[

I thought the W supra series were a bit weak sauce and the R154 is the one to have? Although I was looking for an easy(ish) mount, that would be a bit of a mare to fit to the saab lump :-[

The R154 units dont last at all well as the W series it would appear, I have a W58 in the garage (I think)
The W series is often used to replace the T5's in TVR's when they (inevitably) let go so very capable of big torque.
Can you not get a Saab auto bell housing as these are often shorter than the manuals allowing an adaptor plate to be inserted between the bell housing and the box...

Ah, a few of my friends are using the R154 on 1jz's, 1UZFE(4.0 v8) etc in the drifty world... perhaps they 'do the job at the right price' but will have to keep an eye out for the W boxes then.
Not too sure on the bellhousing of the auto's, I will have to find a dead one to compare. I'm just not wanting the hassle of lining up input shafts and cost of wierd clutches etc, but that may have to be then...

R154 is harder to find in good nick although on paper they look stronger. I paid about 60 quid for a good low mileage W series, there cheap because they dont fail!
The Toyota boxes have quite a standard spline on them so friction plates are not hard to find and then you just need a pressure plate to match.
I was looking at trying to fit an Omega Coaxial slave onto the toyota box to operat the release setup.

Ummmm... interesting... Although Id probably keep the existing Nissan hydrualic system as it is incredibly simple and reliable, but again that would depend on whatever else happened!
Food for thought though... I need to save for a new daliy though too (as per my sig) and hoped I could do most of the 200sx conversion using bits I have lying around... we'll see :y

I have found some more info out and there are a few companies that do vauxhall bellhousings for ford gearboxes (irish rally escorts etc) so looking at that route, despite my hate for the blue oval ;D

Not sure you'll find much suitable from Fraud. The type 9 in standard (and modified) form is too weedy for your type of use. OK in high revving low torque applications as long as the bearings are upgraded to cope with the revs but big torque will kill them.
MT75 is a stronger box (I have one in my Westfield) but doesn't have a replaceable bell housing, first is suitable for caravans only and gear kits are fiendishly expensive.
I think mitchell cotts do a MT75 based box with removable bellhousing but we're straying away from the "pick one up for 60 quid" territory here. As I say, I doubt anything Ford would fit the bill. :-/

However, over a moment of quiet reflection over lunch, I was thinking about mating the nissan box to one of these ford adaptor plates... ummmm! 8-)

The T5 is VERY over rated, particulalry the ones you tend to find in the Uk which are ex cossies and TVR......its also F expensive to fix and upgrade and not as strong as the Toyota versions.
What about looking for a written off Monaro.....nice Tremec unit in them.

I couldnt bring myself to fit just the gearbox and not the engine too! lol
Plus, I doubt very much that would bolt straight up either, so back to step one

The T5 is probably not much better than the MT75, TBH, although it weighs about twice as much, and costs silly money due to inexplicable levels of demand. It has a very "heavy duty" feel to the gearchange. Pretty agricultural and not ideal for quick changes, IMHO.
