Hi
Just gone out and the car has a problem.
1. Very lumpy idle
2. Rough and unsmoothe acceleration.
3. Very strong rotten egg smell.
4. No EML
5. Like a constant misfire
A bit stuck, so hopefully something obvious to someone.
p.s. To anybody that knows me, I apologise to anyone how has pm'd me but I have been having a lot of personal problems. Hopefully be back to normal soon.
-
The smell is from the cats but I wouldn't no if there causing the missfire could be dodgy lambda sensor or something like that.
-
Cats failing??
-
Is there a standard check I can do to confirm cats or sensor. I would have thought that lambda sensor would give EML
-
Nice to hear from you Rob, hope things are picking up for you :y
I wonder if you have a blocked Cat... stick a rubber glove over the exhaust and see how fast it inflates :D
-
Hi James,
Nice to see ye olde faithful ;)
I have done that, remebered from last time. Inflates quick. Exhaust seems to be putting out at the correct rate but really stinks. I tried a good foot down also to try to clear any potential blockage but no effect. :(
-
First step is to check there is a spark on all the plugs / leads are ok
Also try a compresion test if that proves ok...
-
Am I capable of compression test? If so what do I need?

Of course you are mate :y
Just unplug the DIS or crank sensor (to stop engine firing).. screw the compression tester into the spark plug holes one by one... crank the engine and take the reading...
-
Oh, and get a "gunson" tester, they are great value for money (bout £10 on ebay, or £18 in halfrauds)
-
It certainly sounds more up front than exhaust :'(
Similar to when I had ICV and rear multiram connections wrong way round but 5 times worse

A compression tester (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Hi-Gauge-Compression-Tester-By-Gunson-G4101-New_W0QQitemZ260212147862QQihZ016QQcategoryZ30921QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)! ;)
There'll be a specific figure somewhere but you're more concerned that all cylinders are within about 10% of each other. :y
-
I would expect readings to be over 200psi
Just pray you don't find nil compression on one cylinder :-X
-
What is the worse case senario? Can I drive it very gently in the meantime?

If you find nil compression on one or more cylinder/s, then it could be head gasket/s gone, cracked head/s or burnt out valve/s. :-/
I would try to find out what the problem is frist before driving :(
You will find the paperclip test here

don't drive it unless you really have to you could do terminal damage to one or both cats also do the paperclip test and see if any codes are logged you can find out how to do this on the maintanance section if you don't know how.If codes are on ECU put them up on here and someone will tell you what's gone wrong.

Thanks for all your help. I shall see what I can see 2moro and post back some results. I have a feeling that it may be time to say goodbye to her :'( :'(
-
Managed a better look at things today and it appears that it is a simple case of new leads. Drivers bank has 2 split leads. My own fault really, been neglecting it a little over the last 3 months :-[
New leads tomorrow and see how we go.
Thanks for the help :y
-
Probable good news then Rob :D
Look forward to hearing how you get on with new leads fitted... :)

If you are getting a rotten egg smell from the exhaust this is the cat breaking down, you need to replace the cat.
Paul :y
