Hi all,
Some of you may know that I was looking for a car to do a charity rally with in April.
Well, we thought we found the right car 1995 3 V6. All looked ok, to my admittedly untrained eye!
Anyways, my garage has had a look at it and gave me the bad news today... Definite head gasket failure. :'(
He can see where the water is leaking from one side, and also oil on the other side.
I seem to remember people saying that it's not always HG it can be something else - Completely clutching at straws here, what could it be?
If it's definitely HG we may have to ditch the car, and the rally :-/
-
Well oil leak wont be the head gasket......where is the coolant leaking from?
Is i running rough?
-
It's not running rough, it won't rev above 4500 but the garage have read that code as incorrect rpm, and I have a cam sensor to sort that.
He did mentiom where it was leaking from, but I was in the car at the time so couldn't note it - I think he said at the rear on the left, but that might be completely wrong (!) :-[

I might send this flowchart to the garage tomorrow!
-
Is there mayo on the dipstick>>>oil leaking could just be cam covers leaking...water back left side could be HBV...added pressure could be caused by blocked breathers...hopefully its ok mate...
-
If you're in Cardiff, Pop it along to me for a look and a chat.
Unlikely to be HG - which garage?
-
No mayo on the dipstick, just the filler.
I'll have a chat to them tomorrow, and put the ideas to them. If its something simple like HBV or even the oil cooler, I'll be a much happier bunny!
I am in Cardiff - it's currently with Cardiff Brake & Clutch. Good guy there, and I trust him with the work etc.
Hopefully not HG, and just looks like it then.... Will talk to them tomorrow afternoon.
Where are you then James?
-
We are near Riverside
Bring it over maybe one evening or weekend, we'll have a look-see. I expect the breathers just want a clean and the leak is something simple. It's highly unlikely to be HG.
Pop over for a chat, I'll get her indoors to make you a cuppa...
-
Good grief... I really must learn to check which account is logged in when I post :-[
-
Thanks for all the comments guys.
I feel a little easier about it now, and hopefully it won't be an end to the car!
I'll talk to the garage tomorrow, and maybe pop it over for a look-see James/Maria :)
-
I am suprised a garage would diagnose definite HG failure without testing coolant or doing a hot pressure test.... :-/
.... oh wait a lot of billable hours fixing something that isnt wrong to add to the bill so that when I finally pull my thumb out of my arse I might realise it is connected to my wrist...... :o
what was I thinking!! ::) ::) ;D ;D
-
justa word of caution....
while that flow chart is very pretty, and VERY helpful in most cases, according to it's principles and diagnostic method... , my old car was "fine" ( ish...) .... and as everyone can testify, especially James, as he rebuilt it, it was FAR from fine....
-
Actualy Max, its spot on because you would end up at the bottom of one of the threads with the fault still occuring.....at which point you would need to investigate further.
What more is that its a 'do you suspect head gasket' flow chart, not a water leak flow chart :y
-
Well, the garage have checked the HBV and done a pressure test without seeing any evidence of leaking hoses etc :'(
I'm hopefully going to get it to James for a quick look-see with all my fingers crossed that it's not HG.
Else we have to source another car VERY quickly for the rally. Grrr!

If you need it I have a fully working replacement for you...could even 'Trade In' the one you have...
-
Haha, what's the car you have Chris?
I don't think we can spend any more on the car period. We're pretty much at the limit now.
If the car is completely dead, then we have a possible loaner car, but not definite yet.
-
Chris, are you around tomorrow anytime? Or Sunday?
Pop it around the corner to me, we'll get it up on stands and have a darn good look if the weather is dry...
-
Do you mean me? :)
I sent a PM to you, tomorrow I'll struggle with the ruby being on mate. I can try and get it off the garage today or Monday maybe?
Just spoken to the garage again and they're going to check the crank sensor etc.
They've mentioned that after seeing nothing on the pressure test, putting it all back together and running the engine results in the coolant dripping out - not good news I guess.
Maybe put something like radweld in there! haha :)
I'm hating this car already, and all for charideee
