Title: Mein auto ist kaput!!
Post by: Gaffers on 11 March 2008, 18:21:21
Hey fellas,

Just managed to limp home with my beast which is now stuttering all through the rev range. No eml and the performance has gone down progressively over the past week or so.

She has done a few high milage trips recently after a period of 3 months when I was away for queen and blah blah, but a mate was starting her up and driving her around camp (but not if the boss is reading  ::) )

Also did an oil change (by a garage theres a first for everything) and I did get her upto 130mph on the autobahn on sunday  ::) - would any of these have anything to do with it?

At first I though plugs/leads or both but they were replaced about 18months ago.  Cant check the leads too much as it is dark so I will check in the morning.

Now when I got out of the car I smelt something funny.  Very difficult to describe but could be the old 'rotten eggs but being burnt' smell.  I'm thinking one of my cats has given up the ghost.  Also when I put my hand over the exhaust it seems as if only half the engine is firing ie either 1-3 or 4-6 kaput, which follows the cat theory.

Any thoughts or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Gentle tap cats - does it sound like they are broken up.  Also, is eaxhaust throwing out normal amount of pressure (ie, not siliencers blocked?).

If exhaust OK, do paperclip test, if no codes, suspect HT side.

I take it you mean the DIS pack?  :-/ :-/

The exhaust pressure is on/off as if only one bank was firing.  I'll take it down to MT tomorrow and jack it up give it a few taps but I am 90% certain its the cats.

Bummer

Nahhh, the chances of two cats failing at the same time is slim and the chances ar if one failed then the rubber air injection pipe would have melted.

My money is on DIS pack personaly....

I know you have prob answered this one a thousand times but is there a way to test the dis pack?  rubber air injection pipe?  :-/

Mark I think you are right  :y,  I tapped the cats today and no sign of anything moving inside.

I noticed the hot burning smell is coming from the engine bay not the exhaust or the cats themselves.    :o   This I think is a sign of misfire.  I wish I had an emissions tester that would tell me straight away if it was the DIS.

The exhaust is pumping out nice clear slightly humid fumes as it should except instead of the usual continuous flow it now stutters.

Is there anything else I can do to confirm DIS pack failure ?  (just to be sure)

VMT  :y

Not what you want to hear I know: but my tuppence-worth of opinion is DIS pack; sorry.  :(

Sometimes the DIS failure is 'visible' (they split-open); worth a look with strong light and mirror to try and see (as much as is practicable)  ;)

Whilst it's running try pulling off one plug lead at a time, if that lead /plug is working things should get worse. If things don't change then that plug/lead combo is not working... 3 possibilities ..

1. Plug
2. Lead
3. DIS pack

I had a similar problem that was oil in plug wells causing lead to breakdown. Rocker gaskets/breathers/new leads cured it.. :)

It was the pulling of the plugleads and finding them coated in oil that gave the biggest clue !!!

Yeah I had that when I got the car, replaced all plugs and leads about 18months and 10k miles ago.  Keep checking for oil regularly but none as far as I am aware.   8-)

Will try and get a look at the DIS pack today but that storm has just arrived in gusto here.  :o

I know you can do that pulling out thing for the leads but even though I do pretty much all the work on my meega I am petrified of messing with HT leads while HT voltage is going through them..  :-[

Does anyone have a DIS lying around anywhere that would fit on a 96 P reg Omega 2.5V6?

The local garage just quoted me 200 euros for the part alone.  TC doesnt work out here  :'(

For a darn sight less than 200 euro's .. a decent pair of insulated pliers !!  Loosen the sparkplug covers with the engine switched off. Start her up, using insulated pliers and care, lift each plug cover in turn, check result until you find the faulty one, then try a plug/lead change .. got to be cheaper/easier than a DIS pack change !!

just my 2.35p's worth (inc VAT)

You want to try getting an exhaust for an Omega in France. The Feur Vert (kind of Halfords) wanted about 700 Euros for a Bosal system. Even though I speak no French I managed to bet my message across!  ;)  ;)

It me ages to find the bloody thing in the first place, when the best I could manage was " Where is Feux Vert?" while I pointed at a map  :-[
Whe i eventually did, it was closed for dinner! :(
A tube of Gum Gum & an empty can of Boddingtons got me back to Blighty!  :y

Ok just did a quick check on left bank and found cyl 1 is not sparking, no juice coming to the plug.  2 and 3 are sparking fine.  Lost the light so I am looking for a torch to go and look at the lead/DIS connection, if thats ok then looks like I will have to shell out 200euros  :(

Have a word with these people, I know the one advertised isn't for the Omega but he might have one in stock, and a lot cheaper than main stealer http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/COIL-PACK-VAUXHALL-VECTRA-2-5-V6-incl-GSI-DIS-UNIT_W0QQitemZ360031267629QQihZ023QQcategoryZ10404QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD4VQQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p1638.m124

Ok just gained access to the DIS, no apparent damage to the box but pulled out all leads and put them back in again, no change.  Leads still in good condition so is the non-sparking plug that I pulled.

Got to be the DIS right?

swap 2 leads over on the DIS ...and the plugs of course !!  if the misfire moves to the other plug, its the lead, if it stays put its either the plug or the DIS. Now swap the plugs over somewhere... if the misfire moves its the plug .. if it stays put its the DIS ...

logical sequential changing of working/nonworking to track the fault ... 30 minutes work may save you chaning the DIS ... or will confirm the DIS is faulty on that one point

Ok just finished my diagnostic, well sort of....   As it was the longest plug lead I couldent get any other to fit over the plenum but considering the leads are 12-18 months old I doubt that it would be the leads.  I swapped the plugs though and no change to cyl 1.

So I am about to email the guy with the veccy 2.5 DIS pack on fleabay.  Is it the same?  I think it is but then I'm no expert on this part of the engine.  Cdertainly looks the same....
