hi folks...have oil in expansion tank..what are the likely causes please ?
cheers rob

Is the car running ok and it is losing a lot of oil? Probably oil cooler or head gasket. What engine do you have?
-
hi thanks for reply ! its a 2.5 petrol....running fine , no overheating or anything...temp gauge always stays around 90-95
-
oh...it uses around 1/4 ltr every 1,000 miles :)

Check your dipstick. If it's only oil on it (and not water), then its probably not the head gasket, but the oil cooler:)
-
oil cooler starting to go matey !! :y

Oil cooler. Don't use the car until fixed, or you'll have a hell of a job cleaning out all that sludgy oil from cooling system.
Buy the oil cooler as a kit, much, much cheaper.

thanks guys....have checked dipstick and everthing fine...oil cooler it is then !

Stick yer finger in the tank and grab a little "gunk" on your finger.
Are you sure its oil.
I had same problem, thought it was oil but it turned out to be "gunk" loosened from the matrix. Flushed the whole system out....no more gunk in water..spooky but true.

To those who said headgasket.....its oil in the water....and the oil needs to be higher pressure than the pressurised water for that to happen so now conside how much pressurised oil passes through the head gasket......and then you will realise why these symptoms dont point to head gasket.
Any way, its the oil cooler.
