hi all
So the other day the car took about 7 attempts to get started, and sometimes takes a few attempts to start. Not entirely sure why. perhaps starter?
Spotted a fuel leak from the rear this evening, dont know if this is a conected issue
Any ideas for either, taking it to the garage tomorow, hoping for a cheap fix though
-
My first look would be at the glow-plugs, mine did the same until they were replaced. What mileage have you got on, and when if at all were the gp last replaced?
I would sought that leak out though.

A diesel will struggle to start if there is air getting in the fuel supply lines.......
-
208K miles, unsure as to when the plugs were last replaced as we have only owned it for about 2 monthes. IS there a way to check that the plugs will need replacing? and how much is it gonna cost?
And i havnt the foggiest what fuel supply lines are in all honesty
-
Yes, glow plugs can be impedance checked with a multimeter.
...the experts will be along shortly.
Any fuel leak is potentially unsafe though, i'd get that looked at. The plate supporting the tank inlet/outlet pipes at the top of the tank is known to corrode. This is visible when removing the inpection cover plate on the right hand side of the boot. Probably miles away with that diagnosis though.
-
again not sure what this jargon means but will check the boot thingy as suggested

Had my glow-plugs checked and then replaced (all six) by a local independant Vx dealer, they are not cheap but then I had proper parts fitted not cheapo ones off ebay. They are ok but I suppose won't last the distance, depends how long you plan on keeping the car. Fitting I believe can be a bit of a pig especially if you have never attempted them before.
No harm in getting a quote, that's if it is them at fault.

okay i know im begining to sound like a complete illeterate but how many glowplugs does the car actually have?
and how much is each one as a guiide?
also what would the labour be at a mechanics?
-
Your car is a 6-cylinder omega so it has six glow plugs. They are relatively inexpensive, apart from main dealer parts/prices. This guide and links will give you some excellent starting points;

The fitting and fitting costs, as with most things car related is based on how long it takes to remove all the other parts to get to the actual problem! There is also a danger, when removing glowplugs, that they may break off inside the cylinder head causing further problems but any experienced mechanic should be able to advise.
'The Boy', senior moderator of this forum is an 'expert' on omega diesels and i'm sure will be only too pleased to provide you with a very competitive quote. :y

when you say u spotted a fuel leak was that at the back of the engine bay or the rear of the car. From my experience, open the boot lift the mat you will find a circular plate with 3 screws. Unscrew that lid off, get some1 to turn the key (from off position to acc. position-lights go on) whilst you stay at the rear trying to hear firstly, the in tank fuel pump work(u will hear a constant noise for 10 sec or so) and also check for any leaks. If you keep running the car with under 20 lt petrol you will have a prob with this pump. (since it sucks air as well-therefore damages it-)- this could be a reason why it has the start up problem, it could cause problems(cutt offs) whilst driving too.
-
rear of car itself, but it seems to only be coming out whilst driving or just after driving not a constant tricklet, which may suggest the pipe out of the tank is coroded or something??
Thanks for glowplug info, will progrably get a mechanic to do them as dropping things in cylinders really doesnt sound like a bundle of laughs lol
Car hasnt been to mechanics yet (time constraints)
Does that boot check thingy apply to estates?
Will look tomorow as its cold outside lol
-
Yes, it does apply to estates. It's difficult to explain and i'm still not exactly sure where your leak may be from, it was only a hunch.
If you lift the whole boot carpet there is an inspection plate on the right hand side of the spare wheel well, towards the rear. There are three(?) (torx I think?) screws to remove, lift the cover off and the top of the tank with the send and return pipes is visible.
There has been evidence of the send/return pipes, which enter the tank, corroding. The problem will be obvious if it is leaking, just don't expose to naked flames!
With glowplugs, it's a case of having all the correct sockets/tools to remove the plugs, they don't tend to fall inside the cylinder, but in extreme cases they can break causing the thread to be left in the hole. It's the same with amateur or professional!
What it will probably be worth doing, to aid removal for your mechanic, is to locate the plugs (the bits with electrical wire coming from them!) and spray liberally with penetrating spray, such as WD40.

like i said, just a thought....

hi all
Had the mechanics fix the car today
the leak was the pipe that goes from the fuel tank to the engine or something like that had corroded. Which aparantly was also the cause of the non-starting something about the fuel not getting through properly
Glowplugs are good for now aparantly
cost just over hundred quid in total
-
^^^^^^^^^^
Was it that part as mentioned in the guide above then?
Pleased to hear you got it sorted.
-
umm im not to sure but acording to the reciept it was some pipes and clips
not particularly knowledgable about these matters lol
-
Do you know what the price of the parts was? Sorry for questions but thanks in advance!
-
pipes and clips inc VAT was £23.50
-
Interesting, cheers mate :y
-
lol welcome

easiest way to check glowplugs is to measure the resistance from the glow plug relay in the relay box. Or get a tech2 (though that will only say that there is a problem, not which one).
Expect to pay high labour, as the engine was designed by bmw, so getting to service items like glow plugs is timeconsuming.
-
hey
right now where are relay boxrs and glowplugs?
Also i thinkg they probably will need doing since it took a few attempts to start this afternoon

Glow relay in main relay box, about halfway along its shortest edge. The 6 big thick wires go to glowplugs, so measure resistance between each of these and 0v, should be around 1ohm
