Title: bad whining noise
Post by: TIN-V6 on 18 March 2008, 22:37:32
Hi all,
Please can anyone help? I have got a bad whining noise coming from either aircon pump or the power steering pump? Can you buy a lubricant for the aircon pump or is it a new pump, i know you can for power steering pump. :-/
thanks tony

dont think so.the refrigerant is the lubrication for the aircon pump.if it has none then it shouldnt switch on.could it be the drive belt ? :-/

Its quite likely to be the bearings for the A/C pulley, it might change slightly with a/c on/off but try a non-a/c belt to prove it. (same size as 2.0 +a/c)

With belt off you might feel roughness in a/c pulley. Good a/c specialist should be able to extract the pulley and fit replacement with compressor on car.

Does the noise come and go when you turn the air con on and off? (does the air con work?)

Does it get worse when you turn the steering?

I'd say both pumps should be quiet and if it's not a simple belt issue or low PAS fluid the best bet is probably a replacement. You need to find the culprit first though.

Have a similar issue with my car at moment. It has been traced to the air con compressor which was replaced just less than a year ago,so my aircon man is going to replace it under warranty.I thought it was power steering pump first but got under car and put a long screw driver on compressor when engaged and you could hear the bearings grinding ,but the aircon worked perfectly.Pump due to be done Thursday ..weather permitting, but doesn,t look hopefull
