Looking under the car i saw that my new pride n joy has no belt to the air con unit so i suspect it dont work. the circulation switch seems to work but a/c switch light does not come on although i can hear a fan but doesn't chill me out. Any info how to go about sortin it as i haven't tracked down a manual yet, Cheers

It's highly probable that the air con has been disconnected due to a serious type problem .... compressor FUBAR'd or a system leak.
First thing I'd do is have the system pressure checked to discount a leak, if thats ok then the compressor needs checking out - and that I don't know how to do :(

Whoever leak tests the system should have the knowledge and tools etc to check the compressor at the same time.If not ask your Vx dealer, either they can or will know someone who can.

Compressor usually fails due to breaked clutch. To check clutch disconnect electrics from compressor then connect 12v battery across terminals (maintaining polarity) - you will hear the clutch kick in - quite a loud clunk. No sound compressor knacked. New ones in Xs of £250 - expect to pay £40 for good second user - make sure u get right one for your model!
Changing it is another issue - pig of a job but doable - I've done it.

Kwik-Fleece used to do a pressure test and if no leak, re-gas for about 40 squid. If it doesn't work you pay nothing. Dunno if that offer is still on though.
Only problem is that if the condensor is porous, they do not(or didn't at the time) use the uv dye. Sometimes it's can be such a slow leak you'll leave there with all working fine and a day or so later it stops working cos the pressure will have dropped. Happened to me. I swapped the condensor over from my other Omega and got it tested and re-gassed at a place that used the UV dye. No leak...sorted.
Went back to K-F with receipts from other place and fair play, they gave me a refund.
Mind you, my compressor is making some rumbling noises now, but it still works ok and that's about 10k miles later. Looks like that's another part I'm gonna have to swap over. ::)
