Title: how to spot a 3L
Post by: tommycon on 26 March 2008, 21:09:28
hello everyone,,
i`m buying a 3L engine,,, just occurred to me how will i know its not a 2.5?
can someone tell me where the number or stamp will be on it ??
i`ve taken a 2.5 out of my calibra but its not at my house to check on.

i bought a 3L elite with the idea of taking the engine out to put in my calibra then sell whats left,,, but as i`ve said before on this site i`m really impressed with the car,, so thats why i`m buying a engine rather than break my elite up.
 great site by the way.
 cheers.
paul

I believe that the 3.0 has the extended plenum on it, so it overhangs the camcover as the 2.5 finishes at the cover :-/

Only has the extended plenum if its from a 98 onwards engine...the earlier 3.0 had the same short plenum and looked the same from the outside...there should be a plate somewhere near the oil filter that will say engine type...should say x30xe (I think it is) on the plate...

On the bell housing flange on the 2-4-6 bank side (right side when viewed from the aux pulley end) you should see the engine number and engine type engraved.

I have a 3.0 engine in a car I'm stripping currently...if your able to help me remove it then you can see it running before you get it...if you have one in mind already then no worries...

///also check the engine number as per the following piccy...

the first few digits should tell you if its a 2.5 or a 3.0 or whatever....

I seem to remember that when I bought mine, having two pipes coming out of the exhaust meant it was a 3.0, and one pipe meant it was a 2.5.

On the block near the starter motor hole you will find 30 cast in to the block. but as previous posts state the engine no will start x30xe***** :y
